To ask if I should get the fire or paperwhite?

Finished work last week and got £50in amazon vouchers.

So, should I buy a Fire outright or out the vouchers towards a paperwhite ... what do you think?

My paper white must be 5years old now and not a thing wrong with it! It goes everywhere with me and I can read it in full sun -so on the beach etc. It’s my fav belonging

DH recently got an Oasis, but doesn't really rate it, for the money.

Too late for him, though: DD is getting his old Paperwhite for Christmas, with a nice new cover. DS (9) already has one. I use Kindle for Kids to control what books they get and ensure they can't spend loads themselves. I also send things to them by email. As gutting as it is to feed the Amazon behemoth, I must acknowledge the convenience and customer service!

Paperwhite. The Fire is atrocious.

MatildaTheCat · 22/12/2017 14:03

Paperwhite every time. Just off to read mine in the gym spa pool, protected by a waterproof cover. Bliss.

And just in case you weren’t aware, you can set up a family sharing system so up to five devices share your books. I gave my old kindle to my best friend and she gets to read all my choices. Xmas Grin

I have the Voyage and love it. As you already have an iPad and if like reading get a Paperwhite. Dedicated ebook readers are great.

DS has a Kindle fire because I like the parental controls and it's cheap enough that I don't have to hover over him to make sure he doesn't drop it, but it's not as good as a decent Android tablet or iPad.

Skowvegas · 22/12/2017 14:22

So, what do the Oasis and the Voyage do that Paperwhites don’t?

I'm getting the Oasis mainly because it's more comfortable to hold one-handed, but it's also waterproof so you can read in the bath.

DH recently got an Oasis, but doesn't really rate it, for the money.

Yes it's horrendously expensive, but it's my only present and I read on my kindle all the time so I'm coming to terms with the cost painfully.

My older DC have the Fire 7s and they're great as a £30 jobby for kids to play games on but they're very user unfriendly (IMO) and the resolution is rubbish.

I've had my Paperwhite since 2012 and it's still going strong despite multiple dropping incidents and almost daily use. I absolutely love it. I have a very nice cover for it too. I love it so much -too much- that I hide it when I go out in case the house is burgled and it gets stolen. Take the PS4 by all means but leave my Paperwhite alone.

I got it for night feeds initially. These days it sees a lot more bedtime action than my DP.

BikeRunSki · 22/12/2017 14:30

Think of it like this -
The Paperwhite is a dedicated ereader. It does one thing, and it does it very well.
The Fire is a cheap tablet. It does lots of things not so well. Most of these things are done better by your iPad.

NeganLovesLucille · 22/12/2017 14:31

My Paperwhite is my most precious possession. I have had it for a few years now, so the PP who said that they only last 2 years is wrong. I love it! I use it daily and it hardly ever needs charging. It's so easy to use and you can read in any light conditions, whether dark or bright sunlight.

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 22/12/2017 15:26

I've had my Paperwhite for nearly four years and I love it. The battery lasts for ages and I love that I can read outside in the summer.

shhhfastasleep · 22/12/2017 15:31

Paperwhite for reading. No question. It's awesome. Even my technophobe 80+ Mum loves it.

Bratsandtwats · 22/12/2017 15:35

If you already have an ipad, get the paper white.

Mine is several years old, used pretty much every day and still going. Bit slower at turning the page but still useable.
I'm having an Oasis for xmas though. Smile

boredofmyoldname · 22/12/2017 15:40

I've had my Paperwhite for 3 years, my Mum got it for me from a lady selling it as an unwanted gift for £50 on Facebook and it hasn't even been taken out of the box Shock

It is my all time favourite and most useful gift. It's used for atleast 30 minutes a day ,been dropped and stood on by my toddler but it's still going strong looking brand new and working perfectly being charged maybe once a fortnight at most.

If it broke tomorrow if skin myself to get another.

boredofmyoldname · 22/12/2017 15:40

*hadn't not hasn't, obviously.
