1yo dd has this rash that started on her stomach and back but is creeping up to her neck. It does fade and she's been immunized. She's tired and irritable and seems a little off colour but otherwise ok, no temperature or chills. We've called 111 but it's so hard to explain her rash and now I'm worried because she's gone to bed and it's difficult to assess if she's worsening while she's asleep. 111 said it's hard to say what it is because children get viral rashes all the time. As she otherwise seems relatively well they've said monitor her. She had her mmr jab on the 5th so it seems a little late for her to have reacted to that. Another child in the village she goes to a child minder has recently been diagnosed with scarlet fever...

It does look like a viral rash, but I'm no Dr.

EmilyChambers79 · 21/12/2017 19:53

It looks similar to rash that my DS has when he has amoxicillin. It had to happen 4 separate times for him to be diagnosed with a penicillin allergy.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 21/12/2017 19:55

Looks like the pv rash d's had at that sort of age. How is she in herself? If bright and happy and eating all is probably well.

Tiredtomybones · 21/12/2017 19:56

I always use the nhs website - there is a gallery of common rashes on there, so things like scarlet fever are on there. Might be worth a look.

LtGreggs · 21/12/2017 19:58

It looks like the kind of viral rash that my DS2 is prone to getting. His skin usually feels a bit dry when he gets it. (He is 8.5 - seen him with this kind of thing 4 or 5 times, twice this year - DS1 is older and has been rashy maybe once ever.) I still get nervous when I see it however - I had him at GP with it this year, who just said "viral rash". Seems quite dramatic too ignore though when it happens.

Summary - I know I should tell you it's fine, don't do anything unless child seems v unwell in himself. But I know why you are worried!

nomorespaghetti · 21/12/2017 19:59

You can get a delayed rash with the mmr jab, my dd got it. See www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/mmr-side-effects.asp

clutteringfunt · 21/12/2017 19:59

Does it feel rough ? When DD has scarlet fever her rash felt sandpapery it did look similar to this.
They took a swab of her throat and she had antibiotics.

clutteringfunt · 21/12/2017 20:00

Had! Not has

LittleLionMansMummy · 21/12/2017 20:07

The rash is raised but doesn't feel particularly like sand paper. Just checked her, she feels hot and clammy now.

DD had exactly the same rash, 12 days after her MMR.

We put it down to the measles element of the jab.

This probably won't happen to you, but just so as you're aware d- about 12 hours after the rash arrived her temperature soared to 41'/106' and she had to go to hospital. This is, of course, and edge case, and it's highly likely it won't happen to you. But I strongly recommend taking your DD's temperature regularly over night (DD's was 37.2 all day, and got to 41.4 in the hour between dinner and bed).

Also, if that happens:

  1. Calpol
  2. Take all her clothes off but her nappy
  3. Go to A&E and pack enough to stay for 12 hours...snacks, phone charger etc. (they kept DD in observation over night, we'd only packed the stuff for a routine GP visit (the GP shipped us off to A&E)).
NoWittyNamesAvailable · 21/12/2017 20:16

Ds1 used to get this type of rash when he was cutting teeth, he'd be covered head to toe. If she seems happy in herself it is likely to be viral. If you are concerned can you take her to the GP tomorrow?

Pinkitis · 21/12/2017 20:20

It looks like a measles rash to me.

Neverender · 21/12/2017 20:23

DD has just had her jabs and they said to allow 7-10 days for a reaction, so sounds unrelated?

BarbarianMum · 21/12/2017 20:23

Looks like measles, or German measles, to me too. Is she well in herself?

BarbarianMum · 21/12/2017 20:25

Oh sorry, just reread. Well, with no temp its obv not full blown measles but I agree keeping a close eye on her and her temp is likely a good idea.

MaximumVolume · 21/12/2017 20:27

My DS1 had a similar rash a few times. Docs considered it to be a viral rash. Keep an eye on temp & how well she seems.

LittleLionMansMummy · 21/12/2017 20:41

Thanks everyone. She's been fine all day but went downhill after her nap this afternoon, but she still ate well at dinner. She's been more irritable is all. Just took her temp which was normal and gave her Piriton on instruction by 111. The rash looks like it has subsided a bit and isn't as angry looking. Will keep checking her every 30 mins or so for now. I did wonder about delayed mmr reaction.

user1471426142 · 21/12/2017 21:03

We had this post mmr (day 10-11) but ours I think was angrier. I was really worried but the practice nurse said they didn’t need to see unless there was a fever too. But when I sent the picture to a GP friend, she was surprised the practice hadn’t got my little one in for a check out as she would have wanted to check out a full-body rash just for peace of mind. Yours sounds like a slightly longer gap though between mmr and the rash than ours though so I don’t know if you’re still in the window for mmr reactions. I was totally freaking out as I expected any mmr rash to be small. I didn’t expect a full body rash and I don’t think the leaflets prepare you for that.

Redken24 · 21/12/2017 21:06

Does the rash disappear when pressed.

BarbarianMum · 21/12/2017 21:10

If this was meningitis Redken then the OP's little girl would be very, very sick indeed. With meningitis the rash is one of the last things to develop (hence it then being extremely important to get to hospital immediately) and its not a real rash at all , rather a series of haemorages under the skin.

Weedsnseeds1 · 21/12/2017 21:14

No expert, but looks like measles.

juddyrockingcloggs · 21/12/2017 21:16

My little boys rash looked just like that with scarlet fever. Not so much hard sandpaper but scaley to touch.

AnonymousToday2 · 21/12/2017 21:19

Looks like hives/allergic reaction to me. If no temperature and it's subsided a bit after piriton I'd think that was likely.

Has she had anything different to eat today op? Even random things - my Ds2 has a reaction to jam that we've never quite pinned down to a specific, but assume he's allergic to a certain preservative.

LittleLionMansMummy · 21/12/2017 22:10

She hasn't eaten anything different, so not convinced it's an allergy. Thinking back to Tuesday evening she went to bed early because she was shattered and had a slight temp, very lethargic and just wanted cuddles. But yesterday she was fine again and today she's been in fine fettle until this afternoon. Her lymph nodes behind her ears were swollen on Saturday but have gone down a bit now.

@barbarianmum - a viral rash disappears when pressed. Not sure where you got the meningitis from.
