To accept £12 less on a payment?

I sold some goods online to a buyer overseas. The payment took ages to come through and they said it bounced back the first time, which seemed rather strange to me but hey ho.

Finally the money has arrived this morning but it is £12 short. I realise this is likely due to the constantly fluctuating exchange.

Having waited so long, do you think I should just shrug my shoulders, say 'It's Christmas!' and accept it? Would I be an awful Scrooge to insist on receiving the full amount before sending the goods?

No, don't trust them! I'd refund what they paid you and re-sell the item to another more reliable purchaser.

Jaxhog · 21/12/2017 12:05

No way! They can't stiff you with their fee! That's their problem. Report it to Amazon as a non payment, and DO NOT SEND the item until this is resolved.

There are a small number of CF buyers on eBay who try it on. This appears to be one of them.

874a · 21/12/2017 12:09

Don't send it until you get your money!

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/12/2017 12:12

It may be ignorance on the buyer's part (rather than cheeky f*ckery) as when you make a CHAPS payment, you are given an option to choose whether the sender or receiver pays the CHAPS fee. They may have not have realised, they may have just gone with the default setting or they may have deliberately chosen the receiver pays - only the buyer knows this. So they may be a CF or they may just be inexperienced/a numpty.

Whatever you do, don't send the goods until you get the outstanding £12. You have no leverage once you post them.

astoundedgoat · 21/12/2017 12:18

BeQuietAndEatYourGreens Voice of experience here - they will NOT send the fee. Everybody thinks that bank fees are crazy, and somehow not their responsibility. The fact that you are in a different country will make it easier for the buyer to shrug their shoulders and "forget" about you.

Email them and say that you received their payment but it is £12 short and send them a paypal invoice for £12 + paypal fees, i.e. £13.50 or something right away. They do NOT NEED A PAYPAL ACCOUNT to pay this invoice - just a credit card. You cannot send the goods until you receive the payment, and today is the last day for shipping.

SandyDenny · 21/12/2017 12:19

If you're sending them overseas they won;t get there in time anyway will they, I'd wait for the £12.

It seems an old fashioned way to send money but I guess it depends on the banking system in the buyer's country

Rafflesway · 21/12/2017 12:22

Sorry, am I missing something?

Surely, if these clients are outside of the U.K., there is no way they will receive this item in time for Christmas anyway. 🤔

Last dates for Christmas overseas postings was ages ago!

Rafflesway · 21/12/2017 12:24

Sorry meant to add that no way would I accept a £12 shortfall.

But then again I am a tightwad. 😂

YuleBeSorryInTheMorning · 21/12/2017 12:28

Do you even know how much the postage will be? It's not cheap to post to the US, especially now since the cheap postage dates have passed. I suspect you will be making a huge loss on this.

I wouldn't send if the money is short. Raise a dispute if needs be. Refund and resell.

taybert · 21/12/2017 12:30

The thing is, if you don’t accept it and ask for the shortfall and then they say no they’d like a refund please, someone will have to pay the CHAPS charge for that too....

Jaxhog · 21/12/2017 12:36

If they do ask for a refund, they will have to pay any fees. They chose to pay by CHAPS.

rcit · 21/12/2017 12:38

Nonsense like this is why I won’t sell overseas. In your position I’d write off the £12 and send the item. And don’t do overseas, it is always something going wrong.

ifonly4 · 21/12/2017 12:42

Surely they'd know banks charge for CHAPS payment. I'd go back and tell them the amount you received is £12 short and ask for immediate payment in the hope you can dispatch goods before Xmas.

ToadOfSadness · 21/12/2017 12:45

I stopped selling overseas because of the US. One reason being similar to the one being discussed, and the other being that they don't realise that the UK is not an American State and therefore delivery can take a couple of weeks, they had no idea that England was across the sea and a long way away and expected the parcel to arrive in a couple of days.

I would refund by PayPal and call it a day on this one.

ToadOfSadness · 21/12/2017 13:31

I do realise that not all people in the US have no idea of geography, just most of the ones I dealt with.

BeQuietAndEatYourGreens · 21/12/2017 22:16

Toad that's pretty funny actually.

This is to go to a little known country in the Middle East.
