Despite me saying No to the suggestion for the last few years, due to lack of space for one I fear my DM has got me a slow cooker for christmas?

sigh.
There is mainly only me and DH.
dd is a veggie
and DS is not always home.

I feel I have been forced to accept a large unnecessary unwanted gift.
help me see sense

Open it. Just slit a bit of the sellotape enough to see what it is then tape it back up. If it isn't a slow cooker then great. If it is you can plan your reaction. At least knowing either way will help. It may be a lot of angst over a similar size box Smile

FizzyGreenWater · 21/12/2017 09:25

Yes we're veggie, used to have one and it just seemed pointless really- we got rid.

kaytee87 · 21/12/2017 09:27

My dh and I used ours loads before even having any children.
If you've been saying you don't want one then it's quite rude that she's bought it though.

Shard1662 · 21/12/2017 09:30

First world problems.......

CrabappleCake · 21/12/2017 09:34

It's good for making stock without steaming the house up.

Oh and it cooks a ham well.

And....that's it really.

Mine broke in the summer - not going to replace it.

PavlovianLunge · 21/12/2017 09:41

Oh knock it off, Shard, there’s no need to snipe.

Buxbaum · 21/12/2017 09:43

Shard I hope you’re adding that snide little nugget to every AIBU today, because there aren’t very many which aren’t problems more commonly occurring in MEDC.

If you’re determined to find a worthy point then you could consider that giving a totally unwanted gift is a waste of both money and wider environmental resources, of course.

Elllicam · 21/12/2017 09:48

Yanbu OP, I’m vegetarian too and we ditched our slow cooker. The idea was nice but it just made everything sloppy and mushy. I think they are good for meat but I’ve never found a vegetarian recipe that was better for being slow cooked.

Schroedingerscatagain · 21/12/2017 10:02

We’re veggie and have two! Fantastic with the right recipes and awesome for jacket potatoes

Pinterest was definitely the place for good recipes

That said, mil should respect your wishes

Herbcake · 21/12/2017 10:08

We had a recipe book with ours and everything seemed to involve a lot of prep. Browning meat in flour and so on.

Number one, who wants to do that at breakfast time and number two, so much for 'just throw everything, turn it on and leave it' which is what we were originally sold on.

meredintofpandiculation · 21/12/2017 10:09

It's often the unlikely things that work in a slow cooker - I used to make a deliciously moist and rich pear and chocolate cake.

kaytee87 · 21/12/2017 10:16

@meredintofpandiculation ooo recipe please? Sounds amazing.

ParadiseCity · 21/12/2017 10:18

We get an unwanted gadget every year from one relative. We keep it unsealed and see if we can return it to somewhere that stocks it, e.g. if it has John Lewis tape on they will do an exchange. If not, we donate it to charity because I am too lazy to ebay.

I definitely would not bother with vegetarian slow cooking. Or anything that involved putting a tea towel under the lid Confused

SilverySurfer · 21/12/2017 10:51

You put perfectly edible food into a slow cooker, inedible gunk comes out. Either sell it or use it to make scented candles.

specialsubject · 21/12/2017 11:29

they work well for stuff that needs, er, slow cooking. That's not veg.

they cost under £20 so give to a charity shop.

MrsMotherHen · 21/12/2017 11:31

They really dont take up much space at all we had a tiny tiny kitchen and we used to put it ontop of our oven it was a ceramic hob obv it was off. I love my slow cooker!

liminality · 21/12/2017 12:04

I'll have it, I want a second one, it is literally my favourite appliance - even my sandwich press is a close second.
Stews, stocks, salsas, pasta sauces in bulk, soups, potatoes, caramel onions, stewed fruits, jams and compotes, even making yoghurt or bread rise, and everything in bulk so there is more for lunches and the freezer stash.
I eat 95% vegan too, so the meat thing isn't an issue.
And yes, mulled wine!
