To take this iPhone contract ???

lauramcr · 21/12/2017 05:32

My network provider has offered me a contract but I’m not sure if it’s decent:

iPhone X 64GB
32GB data/unlimited calls/texts
24 months Spotify premium & Vodafone global roaming
£59 per month, no handset cost
£1,416 over 24m

iPhone X costs £999 so the line rental works out as £17.40 per month. I could buy the phone outright but I don’t think I’d find a comparable sim only plan

I can afford the monthly cost but it is significantly higher than my current contract. I’m also not 100% sold on iPhone X (the notch, no Touch ID, no gold variant, app support, price). Would hate it if 2018’s new iPhone significantly improved on it and I’m stuck with the X

Two questions:

  • is the offer from Vodafone shit?
  • would you pass on iPhone X?

The offer is great but only if you like the phone enough.

stickytoffeevodka · 21/12/2017 05:50

It's a good deal but no way would I be spending £60 on a phone!

MadeForThis · 21/12/2017 06:03

Offer is good. Wouldn't go for the iPhone X.

The lack of button makes it feel like using a Samsung. No awful thing but specs are better on a Samsung s8 so if you really prefer that style of phone then get the Samsung.

The screen really really annoys me for some reason. I don't know if I could get used to living with it.

Colour not so bad as realistically it will be in a case.

If you are due to upgrade and your current iPhone is playing up I would go for a iphone 8. If your current iPhone is fine I would reduce your contract to sim only. Save some £ and wait and see what Apple release in Sept.

For me the difference between the 6s,7 and 8 are too small to bother upgrading unless necessary.

peachgreen · 21/12/2017 06:19

I agree with @MadeForThis, the changes aren't significant enough to make upgrading worth it just yet. I'm still on the 6S Plus on a sim-only and very happy with it for now.

stickytoffeevodka · 21/12/2017 06:37

I have the SE and pay £27 a month for unlimited texts and calls, and 1GB internet which I never even come close to using up - I'm always connected to wi-fi unless I'm on my break at work or need to look up something on the move (not often as 3G/4G here is practically non-existent). The £27/month also includes the handset cost.

TBH I don't get the appeal of the bigger, newer models. They are, in my opinion, massively overpriced, and I don't understand paying what will be £1500 for a phone, when you can buy a high-range MacBook for less money, and still have enough left over to buy a decent iPhone outright.

What does the X do that the older models don't do, to justify the frankly ridiculous increase in price?

You can unlock it with your face and there's a ridiculous notch at the top of the screen, apart from the slightly improved tech specs that's about it.

FizzyGreenWater · 21/12/2017 07:58

@stickytoffeevodka what network are you with? - if you don't mind me asking 😄 That sounds like the kind of contract I need!

glow1984 · 21/12/2017 08:00

The offer is very good. I’m with o2 and the deals I’ve seen aren’t that good.

However, do you really want the Notch lol :D

Heratnumber7 · 21/12/2017 08:04

What one person will think is a good offer, another person will think is dreadful.

It depends on how much you like the phone, use Spotify etc, and how much data you think you need.

Personally, I think it's a lot to pay for face recognition when I've managed quite well without that function up to now.

BikeRunSki · 21/12/2017 08:39

I am completely with stickytoffee here.i have had an SE for 18 months or so and it does everything very well. My (very large, public) employer recently moved to SEs (from Blackberries) for field staff, despite the 6 being available at the time.

stickytoffeevodka · 21/12/2017 08:42

@FizzyGreenWater I'm with O2 :) it's a 24 month contract.

Travis1 · 21/12/2017 08:44

I agree with @madeforthis and it's why I've stuck with the 6s plus, there isn't enough of an improvement for me to want to shell out another £1K.

Animation86 · 21/12/2017 08:45

I’ve always bought the phones outright and went to 3 for unlimited everything.

BornInSydneyy · 21/12/2017 08:47

I wouldn’t ever recommend going with Vodafone tbh. No phone company is great but they are by far the worst.

Heratnumber7 · 21/12/2017 08:49

I've been with Vodafone for years and so has DH. No problems with them. In fact would recommend them.

Which brings me back to - what's right for one isn't right for the other....

amusedbush · 21/12/2017 09:32

Vodafone are absolutely awful in my experience, I couldn't get away from them fast enough. I have several friends with them too who have complained heavily about the service and things like random amounts of money (£200+) being taken from their bank account in error.

araiwa · 21/12/2017 09:48

Lol at spending £1000 on a phone thinking it will impress people when they see you playing angry birds or sending a message on it

Hint- it wont.

Harsh, everyone has their vices, shoes, handbags, whatever. Don't think she needs a slagging for her phone choice, she just wants to know if her contract is a good deal.

araiwa · 21/12/2017 10:04

£1000 for a phone is not a good deal

Eliza9917 · 21/12/2017 14:28

I'm on a sim only plan so buy my own handsets with T-Mobile. I pay £17pm inc VAT for unlimited data, 2000 mins (I never phone anyone) & unlimited texts. I think I have to pay to call voicemail - though may be wrong - and I have to pay to send pics by SMS, but now I have whatsapp.

I have had this deal for years though and it was a loyalty deal as I've had the same account since I was 17, since the 1-2-1 days.

FizzyGreenWater · 21/12/2017 17:56

@stickytoffevodka thank you!! :)

FizzyGreenWater · 21/12/2017 17:56

@stickytoffeevodka thank you! :)

oops sorry missed out an e in the post above!

FizzyGreenWater · 21/12/2017 17:57

Yes I'm trying to get away from Vodafone too.

They really are utterly horrible.
