I see this comment on so many photos on FB of people's (tiny) children....especially girls.

It annoys me for reasons I can't quite articulate.

Why do people put that??

It's a 4 year old! Or a 6 year old! It's not "So grown up" at all!

I think people usually post this when they haven't seen a child in a while. In their minds eye they are still the way they were when they last saw them and then they see a photo a year later and they think wow they are so grown up. I don't think they mean grown up as in they look like an adult. It's like "where has the time gone"

Capelin · 20/12/2017 13:11

This is a perfectly normal comment OP. It means compared to how they used to look.

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 20/12/2017 13:11

You obviously know they mean growing up!

elliejjtiny · 20/12/2017 13:13

I do this Blush. I mean that they have grown since I last saw them or they don't look like babies anymore.

twiney · 20/12/2017 13:13

Its just one of those lazy comments people put to make themselves sound like they give a shit.

Like when you add "Aww!" under a baby photo or "looking good" to someone's holiday pic.

WhiskeySourpuss · 20/12/2017 13:15

There's a pic of my DD on Facebook of her first day of high school & I remember that being an "oh she's looking so grown up" moment for me at the time... looking at the photo today she looks very much not grown up compared to how she is now that she's 17. I suppose it's a subjective term depending on the circumstances at the time.

Glumglowworm · 20/12/2017 13:34

YABU

it’s not just said about girls, I see it said about all children pretty much equally

It just means they’ve got older since the last time the person saw them or when parents say it about their own DC it seems to be usually either in comparison to previous years or at a milestone like starting school. Their four year old is grown up compared to the preschooler they had until recently.

YABU, you're looking to make a problem out of nothing. It's just a throw away comment.

amusedbush · 20/12/2017 13:39

I posted this on a friend's photo of her son just a few days ago. He has really stretched out and no longer looks like a toddler. I'm not saying he looks like an investment banker!

AuntLydia · 20/12/2017 13:40

This really isn't just a girl comment. There is nothing sinister to it. They put that comment because a child looks more grown up than they remember them looking/usually look. That's it. Perhaps you are struggling to articulate your annoyance because there is no good reason for it?

PurpleMinionMummy · 20/12/2017 13:43

Because the child looks like they're growing up

Ofthread · 20/12/2017 14:01

I know what you mean op. When I was a child I really hated people saying this to me for some reason. Something to do with them forcing me into something I was deeply suspicious of. But, I was a strange child.

Hopeful103 · 20/12/2017 14:14

Yabu , why do some people dig deep to find something sinister. It is just exactlu what it means. As for the implication that its only girls and therefore it must be something 'society's related, it's ridiculous.

SadTrombone · 21/12/2017 01:07

@twiney "Its just one of those lazy comments people put to make themselves sound like they give a shit."

...or - it's cos the kid has grown since they last saw them.

I thought I was a cynical fucker.
