To not know what biology 101 is

Nickynackynoodle · 20/12/2017 00:07

Someone in a misappropriated position of “power” refers to it constantly but also says that they can cut it but are defo not required to back it up at all. Whatsoever.

I have no idea what it means so when I’m told to “think beyond it” or “read more than” it... AIBU to not know wtf I’m supposed to do?

I mean, what even is it? A text book? And what’s beyond it?

Confused

They can cite it, not cut it. Sorry. Dropped my phone in the loo earlier.

It means "beginners biology", so the kind of simple facts about biology that you'd expect most people to understand. It's an Americanism, as PP says it's the name often given to the first class in a subject in the first year of university.

Ok. So if I say “ your understanding is wrong, read beyond biology 101” what would you read if I refused (tantrum style) to provide reference?

Help!

I have no idea. It would depend on what exactly they thought I was wrong on. Not giving you any idea of what you could look to is crappy, as is their attitude generally tbh. It's a bit off to brush you off like that.

steff13 · 20/12/2017 01:40

I wouldn't think you were literally telling me to read something; I'd think you were dismissing me as uninformed about biology, i.e., I only grasp the basics.

nooka · 20/12/2017 01:43

It's also a pretty rude thing to say. I would ignore it because I doubt that the person who said it has the advanced knowledge that they are by implication claiming.

AssassinatedBeauty · 20/12/2017 01:46

Yes, they're trying to dismiss you. They're telling you to go away and think about it some more, not go and read a specific book.

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 20/12/2017 01:50

Is this to do with gender identity politics?

Is the person saying it, implying that they think that gender and sex are in fact social constructs? Are they saying that you thinking that sex is a biological fact is "biology 101" and that there are more "advanced" ways to appreciate it?

If so, then they're wrong IMO - they don't have more "advanced" knowledge - you have a difference of opinion.

If they are refusing to back up what they're saying that also sounds like many Trans Rights Activists - a TRA hashtag is #nodebate for example.

Asking them to prove what they're saying will be resisted in the strongest terms - because they have no logical argument basically, but they won't admit that to you - or even to themselves probably.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 20/12/2017 01:57

They don't actually want you to go ahead and read something, they're just saying you don't know much about biology, that you only know the basics.

It's just a turn of phrase; you don't need to take it literally.

Battleax · 20/12/2017 02:02

Is this in American context? It's an odd phrase to repeatedly use in the UK.

Janetjanetjanet · 20/12/2017 02:05

It just means that it's basic biology, right?

So the fact that everyone has a different blood type is biology 101.

TheHodgeHeg · 20/12/2017 02:54

If I were you I'd Google whatever it is you've apparently misunderstood. Or ask the actual question on here.

araiwa · 20/12/2017 04:30

Your boss is saying you dont know what youre talking about and have , at best, a minimal knowledge of the subject

nooka · 20/12/2017 05:54

Actually looking again at the OP I think that raisinsarenottheonlyfruit may well be onto something. Not that the OP is necessarily being told to 'think beyond' or 'read more than' biology 101 in reference to gender ideology but that the person using these phrases is probably trying to shut her down over a difference of opinion. It's the sort of thing I can imagine a conspiracy theorist saying, along with accusations of being a 'sheeple' for having a normal mainstream type opinion where the other party has got their information from alternative sources.

Nickynackynoodle · 20/12/2017 11:36

@raisinsarenottheonlyfruit seems to have nailed it. Dismissal and refusal to debate.

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/12/2017 11:41

Ha i think I know who you are talking about and clearly we are all missing spme.advanced biology where things really mean the opposite to what the basics do.

Biology is hate speak

Greenshoots1 · 20/12/2017 11:42

biology 101 is a website for Biology A level students

SenecaFalls · 20/12/2017 14:24

It's not really used pejoratively in the US that often. As an adjective, it just means basic. It's often used in a training context to describe an introductory course or presentation.
