How many days to pay colleague back?

I organised the purchase of Christmas gifts from the management team to our staff members - between 5 of us the gifts came to about 500, so they each owe me 100. I bought the gifts as my colleague who had said she would do it at the meeting at which we discussed what to get etc was too busy. The gifts have been delivered, are being distributed, and I sent an email yesterday morning with my account details for people to pay me back for them. Only one person has transferred the money yet - AIBU to be impatiently waiting for my cash??!! What is the acceptable time before I should remind people?? One of them still owes me 50 from a previous wedding gift for a colleague that I organised! I won't be organising gifts from the team again that's for sure but I know that if I leave it until after Christmas they'll forget altogether ...

Blimey how bloody cheeky they have. Good you got the wedding money too. Hope the final person has paid up now. Lesson learnt for next year!

Is 1986 the year you were born Zara86?

I ask because you are obviously too young to know about gift tokens Grin

Before everything was plastic a gift token was an actual piece of paper that did the same thing. To me and I bet most people of my age if you say you're giving someone a token you mean you are giving them a money equivalent. That's why I thought it was funny that the gifts had changed to plants.

On a side note isn't a plant a bit of an odd thing to give at work, it's not an easy thing to carry home on the bus or train unless of course there are 500 employees and they are miniature plants Smile

I followed your thread feelinginthedark. Very happy for you that you've had nearly all the money back now. Do not worry about public shaming the last person into paying up. I would hate to even owe a fiver to somebody. Guess you won't be volunteering again.Grin

feelinginthedark · 21/12/2017 16:22

Sandydenny 150 employees approx and yes they were small plants in decorative pots!

SandyDenny Yes it is, I've never heard of a gift card being called a token. I have heard of vouchers and coupons from the paper being called tokens though along time ago. You don't get paper vouchers any more, everywhere gives gift cards now so that's what small token to me would meal a small gift. I did think plants was an odd one too but I'm guessing maybe they were poinsettias for Christmas.

Put aside your feelings of awkwardness for your own sake!

bigbluebus · 21/12/2017 16:51

I think you might now understand why your colleague who agreed to do it was "too busy". Presumably she's been caught out like this before!

Arkengarthdale · 21/12/2017 17:03

There's a world of difference between a 'token gift' and a 'gift token'!

eurochick · 21/12/2017 17:08

They are being cheeky. We had our team lunch yesterday. The usual deal is that the team pay for their own food and the management put the booze on a separate bill and split that between them. About an hour after we got back I got an email from the HoD's secretary (HoD had put it on his card) saying how much we owed. I tried to do a Bank transfer about an hour after that when I had sorted some urgent work (it didn't go through so I resent it today). I don't see why my colleague should be out of pocket.

feelinginthedark · 21/12/2017 21:17

Yes, definitely won't be doing this again. To be honest the organisation has expanded over the last few years and the arrangements that used to work are no longer I think. Next year I'll push for us each to look after our own department to avoid this messing about
