‘Selling’ items for free

LoopyLou1981 · 19/12/2017 16:43

I’ve had a few bits up for sale for a while. No one has shown any interest so I put them up for free figuring they might as well go to a good home instead of the tip (and it might help someone struggling with finances over Xmas).
4 people have come forward for various bits, I’ve told them what times I’m in so they can collect and they’ve come back asking that I drop the items off for them because they’re local!
AIBU saying no, it’s free you can sort out collection?! It seems a bit cheeky to me!

It is cheeky!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 19/12/2017 16:45

Nope.
You want it, you collect it!

Animation86 · 19/12/2017 16:46

No - why use your time and petrol etc?
They can collect!

winnerwinnerchickendinner · 19/12/2017 16:47

I do think it's cheeky, but your offering it because it may help someone out and this person may not drive, could be ill, could have many reasons as to why they are asking. BUT if they are being lazy that's a whole different story. I don't drive and always ask if delivery is an option but I always offer to throw a couple of quid in for petrol.

Eliza9917 · 19/12/2017 16:47

You'll probably see those bits back up for sale shortly too...

HooraySunshine · 19/12/2017 16:49

Xmas Shock You are giving away items and they are saying you need to deliver? That seems cheeky to me. All four people have asked you to do this? If you're local to them, then they're local to you, so why can't they collect the items if they want them?

Personally, it seems more hassle than it's worth to me. Maybe you could take the items to a local charity shop or something similar so you can get them out of your house and still goes to a good cause of your choice.

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 19/12/2017 16:53

YNBU...I’ve recently put wardrobes and beds on GTree for free and was messed around so much by people not turning up, wanting delivery etc. Thought I was doing a good deed. Never again, next time I’ll either send them to charity for homeless people setting up home or I’ll take them to the tip

FlouncyDoves · 19/12/2017 17:01

It is cheeky. I suppose you could find out if they live closer to you that the tip? For example it would take me a round trip of an hour to get to the tip and back. Therefore if someone lived closer than that it might be worth it.

LoopyLou1981 · 19/12/2017 17:06

@eliza9917 I know...I’m just not going to search in the hope of keeping up the pretence that I’ve helped people! 😂

@hooraysunshine yes 4 people although there have been a few others that have come to pick stuff up so it’s not quite as bad as it sounded!

Call British heart foundation, they will collect from you and they're in my opinion a great charity.

AdmiralJaneway · 19/12/2017 17:12

Definitely call British Heart Foundation- I’ve bought some “ new to me” sofas from them for a very decent price and I love them!!

LoopyLou1981 · 19/12/2017 17:13

Thanks! I’ll give them a call and see if they’d like any of it x

See if a charity can pick them up. They're being fucking cheeky, even if they don't drive. They're getting a free item. You're not fucking Argos. Tell them there's a charge for delivery. They scarper.

cherrycola2004 · 19/12/2017 17:20

Fine if they offer you a tenner to drop it off if local otherwise CF

disappearingninepatch · 19/12/2017 17:40

Is it furniture? If so, British Heart Foundation or Emmaus will collect. That way, you'll know it's doing some good.

DenPerry · 19/12/2017 17:44

Cheeky! They're lucky enough to get something for free.

HRTpatch · 19/12/2017 17:48

I'm moving house and giving away furniture and appliances. We are talking John Lewis dining tables and Heals bookcases so not crap.
I have been messed around by so many people not turning up.
Our local charity furniture people aren't great either.
So I've taken lots to the tip.
People really do take the piss.

AJPTaylor · 19/12/2017 17:53

I never do freecycle anymore. I put stuff on ebay for a quid with 100 percent going to Shelter. Oddly this means so far people have turned up. Maybe ive been lucky

user1497357411 · 19/12/2017 20:06

"British Heart Foundation" can just pick them up, can they? As easy as that? Oh yes!. .........Except they only pick up in our area between 9 am an 1 pm on Mondays when we are at work and they really thougth we were CFs to ask if they didn't ever do any afternoon runs. Oh, I am so sorry I tried to donate several pieces of furniture to your charity! How effing rude of me! The homeless shelter couldn't be arsed to return my phone call, so I don't know...... I don't want the items to go on the dump. I guess, I'll try one more charity in the new year and then that's it.

user1497357411 · 19/12/2017 20:09

also the nearest place where you can donate to a women's shelter is half and hour away, don't pick up, only take delivered charity goods and are only open on week days.

Katescurios · 19/12/2017 20:11

I've had at least 5 collections by BHF and each time they have specified a date and am/pm and have asked me to leave the items outside covered with a sheet or tarp to stop them getting wet if it rains.

They have always been professional, polite and appreciative in my experience.

AndromedaPerseus · 19/12/2017 20:14

If the items are smalljust leave them outside your house with a note saying free please help yourself. They’ll Be gone by the end of the day

Tugtupite · 19/12/2017 20:19

Another vote for BHF... excellent option.

EssentialHummus · 19/12/2017 20:21

BHF are, in my experience, fussy buggers. I'm sure they do good work but donating to them ended up costing me £100 in removal fees.

SherbetPiips · 19/12/2017 20:23

Of course they are cheeky, and likely to sell the items themselves.

One of the reasons why it's usually more time efficient to sell things, even for £1 than giving them away. You still have time wasters, but a lot less than when it's free.
