Following with interest!

DH went to one as a works do, they were all given a sheet with their character and encouraged to dress in keeping, over the course of hte evening there were a couple of professional actors who developed the story and they eventually revealed whodunnit.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 19/12/2017 09:31

Lunas did he enjoy it?

We went to one last year. It was a date night for us and we actually had a lot of fun. Most of the others there were older than us and we felt a bit out of place to start with (we are 26 and 30). We were seated at a table with guests age 65+ and had one of the funniest evenings ever!
I think there was a hen party across the room also and they seemed to be enjoying themselves.
It was something a bit different to do and we enjoyed it, would do it agin.

Great! Anxious did the actors involve people immediately or was there a bit of a performance first? Or was it sort of ongoing? How does that bit work?

It went straight into a performance CheapSausagesAndSpam. We had all seated in the dining room and all around us things were going on - the theme was a murder at an awards ceremony so all around us were 'agents' and 'stars'. We had to be really observant because there was no formal introduction that the night had started.

There were some more performance type bits but even then you had to watch for the interactions between the other actors who weren't central for clues.

During the meal actors moved around the tables still in role making little comments and conversation which added more clues. There were also boards around the room with little bits of information on them in case you missed things which might be significant (or not!).

At the end we all filled out who we thought and why and there was some idea sharing from each table before the 'killer' and their motive was announced.

We were totally wrong on our table but it was still a lot of fun!

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 19/12/2017 11:37

anxious right! Did they make the announcement as part of the performance?

CheapSausagesAndSpam yes they did. After we had the discussion around the tables of what we thought they wen't back into acting and made an arrest, the detective included how they came to that conclusion during the arrest and the killer admitted what they had done, why, how etc...

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 19/12/2017 11:43

I really like the sound of them...I know some people think they're a bit naff or whatever but to me, they seem fun!

I worked one at a pub earlier this year. They decided I should be the victim so I had to spend the rest of my shift sitting in the cellar watching netflix.

Fantastic! Grin

I went to one on holiday, I was given a role but not any actual information, only the murderer had anything to go on so the rest of us were just chatting shit to various tables of people

It was fun, I’m definitely no actor but it was fun. Lots of people lost interest quite quickly though, and I think it would’ve been better with professional actors who had a story to stick to and clues to drop so people had something to go on to try and solve the mystery

tobee · 19/12/2017 12:45

I've always had a secret longing to do one of these op. One in an old hotel in Harrogate or somewhere. Set in the 1930s. For a weekend!

I think you'd want it to be completely naff or surprisingly professional. I've reads loads of detective books but I'm sure I'd be rubbish at the detecting. Xmas Grin

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 19/12/2017 12:45

Glum so they didn't involve the audience much? What did they do? Just blab between themselves and expect people to watch?

Ive been on 2 and as long as you can relax and get into the spirit of it theyre really good fun ! They are a bit cheesy, the actors arent normally the best but ive enjoyed them and would do another one

gabsdot · 19/12/2017 15:57

I've been to 2 different ones, both were pretty lame. It was very difficult to follow the story and keep up with what the characters were doing. We were supposed to figure out whodunnit but we did't bother.
One actor was incredibly rude and offensive to to us. He came to our table and asked me if I was in the family way. I wasn't, (That was bad enough, but it got worse). Then he said to DH, Does the plumbing not work. Now unbeknown to him, the plumbing doesn't actually work. DH is infertile. I told him very politely to please go away and stop bothering us and he wouldn't go. The entire table was mortified for poor DH. The actor must have been totally thick to not notice. He kept asking and Eventually my BIL told him to F off and he finally left.
I complained to the hotel and to the theatre company and they just brushed me off and said I should expect adult humour.
It wasn't a great evening all in all.
