In regards to the ALfie Evans case. The family do stress that they don't want any threats or anything to the hosp. It has been rumbling on for a long time, but is now about to go to court so is gaining more prominence in social media as AH don't want the child to be moved to another hospital. I assume they will have had huge discussions with lawyers in the NHS etc to prevent a CG situation but that is seeming more and more likely now.

Possibly but then surely you would say that on the fund raising page. Looking at it there is money coming in from all over the world, people should know what they are supporting.

It seems like it is going to be another one where social media whip up a storm and everyone becomes an expert from the comfort of their own home which sadly does nothing to help the family who are going through an awful time

CaveMum · 19/12/2017 07:00

I do think that the people who whip themselves up over stories like this about a child/family they have absolutely no connection to are akin to the old women who would sit knitting beside the guillotines in Revolutionary France - they love the “spectacle” and want to be part of the mob hurling abuse.

Sadly people have always been capable of mass hysteria but Social Media has given them an additional platform on which to publicly flog themselves.

TheXXFactor · 19/12/2017 07:22

It's worrying that a Hospital can deny possible treatment and decide that the child's life comes to an end

There are hundreds of thousands of obscure medical conditions, some of which only affect 2 or 3 people in the world. It can take years to make a diagnosis. This baby does not have years, sadly, and it would be wrong for him to suffer more investigations that will not affect the outcome.

In cases like these, doctors are guided by the clinical picture (how sick the patient is), as much as possible diagnoses.

BrizzleDrizzle · 19/12/2017 07:25

I do hope not. Poor Alfie Sad

The lack of diagnosis perhaps means this is a different situation but whatever, it's incredibly sad.

LakieLady · 19/12/2017 07:44

The FB page is very angry that the courts/ hospital have assigned a guardian to decide Alfie's best interests. People are outraged. But surely it's common knowledge that this is done for kids in all sorts of situations?

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But over the years I've learned not to make such assumptions. Some people can believe the most ridiculous things, especially when they see a passing bandwagon they can jump on.

some illnesses never have a diagnosis in that there is no specific name to it, but they follow a pattern, in that case they will be listed as undiagnosed metabolic condition or undiagnosed degenerative condition etc. But usually they show features of similar illnesses such as loss of function, deteriorating brain scans, loss of muscle activity etc. Having a diagnosis doesn't change the disease progress, it just attaches a label to it. I think the not having a diagnosis is a red herring. treatment will be decided on clinical picture, such as what his brain scans and brain activity look like.

specialsubject · 19/12/2017 12:13

here we go again.

Use the fundraising to let him go where the parents want to take him, and release the hospital bed here. He is suffering where he is, if the parents won't release him from that then there's no difference if he suffers abroad with more futile treatment. It's not what I would do to anyone but it isn't my decision.

There's an American kid where the parents are convinced it is interaction - it isn't, it is endless painful seizures. Evolution is a bastard sometimes.

I doubt the 'army' will be around for the lifetime of care, however long that is. Poor, poor Alfie. And his poor parents with the baying religious mob around them.

meddie · 19/12/2017 13:54

Even if the hospital abroad can diagnose him, the fact he cant breathe unaided indicates he already has severe damage to his brain. They cant fix that, so what is the point of going there? and £50k wont buy a lot of ICU care, a bed costs £1500 to £2000 a day
