To think Matilda the musical is a bit pants

I like the book. I like Tim Minchin. The actors were all doing their job v well. But it just didn't do it for me.Yet everyone seems to rave about how amazing it is. Not many catchy tunes. No huge musical numbers to make you gasp. The fear is too pantomime. The pay off not wonderful enough. Or is it just me?

DD adored it (went when she was ten). She went to see School of Rock last month and that's her current favourite ever (she's 13 now).

TossDaily · 18/12/2017 14:33

Loved it. And I'm not a huge fan of musical theatre in general.

Dancergirl · 18/12/2017 16:57

YABU

It's one of the greatest shows in the West End for a long time. Fantastic songs and such clever lyrics. Brilliant sets.

Completely agree it's the work of a genius. Especially love the swings and Bruce and the cake. Must be great fun to play Bruce!

Dancergirl · 18/12/2017 16:58

wishing Miranda was in Annie, not Matilda.

SisterLocation · 18/12/2017 17:00

We really enjoyed it, thought the songs were great.

timshortfforthalia · 18/12/2017 17:02

I don't really like any live performance, but especially hate musical theatre. Matilda blew my mind! I went in with no expectations, which probably had an impact.

purplemunkey · 18/12/2017 17:03

I loved it.

Nowthefunbegins · 18/12/2017 17:05

Amazing musical one of our family favourites

ShowOfHands · 18/12/2017 17:12

It was exceptional. We're going for the second time next year.

hackmum · 18/12/2017 17:38

I was massively disappointed in it. But I don't like musicals very much at the best of times.

m0therofdragons · 18/12/2017 17:40

I saw the RSC first run of it in Stratford before it went to the west end. I was dubious as I love RSC and wanted to see Shakespeare. It was even in the rehearsal space as they were doing up the main theatre. I loved it so much!

We saw it again last March with dc 6 years after I first saw it and still love it. I would definitely go again. Everyone has different tastes though.

MustRememberTheLInFingerling · 18/12/2017 17:41

I’m another Matilda lover BUT I feel very much the same about The Lion King - everyone raved about it but I am very ‘meh’ about it.

MsGameandWatching · 18/12/2017 17:44

It was better than Charlie and the chocolate factory. But Aladdin is way better than both.

NataliaOsipova · 18/12/2017 17:44

Thank goodness there's someone else out there! Seen it a few times with different children. Thought it was so so at best; even my DDs weren't overly impressed. The problem, I think, is that these are adaptations of children's books, but the economics of such big scale productions don't work unless you can appeal to an adult audience. Hence they "oomph it up" a bit and it loses something in the process. I'd give it 6/10.

PrincessoftheSea · 18/12/2017 17:46

I loved it

underneaththeash · 18/12/2017 17:46

Its amazing, we've seen it a couple of times and loved the song and the staging.

glitterballbag · 18/12/2017 17:55

We absolutely loved it and would definitely go again

Increasinglymiddleaged · 18/12/2017 17:59

Yabvvu it's amazing.

HundredYearOldMan · 18/12/2017 18:59

I didn’t love it either. Found it a bit grating. Absolutely loved School of Rock which I saw the night before.

Amanduh · 18/12/2017 19:01

There are loads of catchy songs though?!

Quickchange1 · 18/12/2017 19:29

It's absolutely amazing. The set is sublime and much cleverer than Charlie &the chocolate factory! 'When I grow up'is utterly perfect

KalaLaka · 18/12/2017 19:31

@ILoveMillhousesDad you'll have a fabulous time!

bridgetoc · 18/12/2017 19:36

I thought it was amazing.........

bumbleymummy · 18/12/2017 19:37

We all loved it. I’ve never seen DS sit so still through something so long. He was completely enthralled :)

domesticslattern · 18/12/2017 19:39

We loved It!
