To have been taken aback by child's joke.

We were at a Santa trip thing today and the "elves" were going round asking children to tell jokes. One boy, about 4 years old stuck his hand up and told the following joke.

Why didn't the sack go to the toilet?
Because it didn't have a penis.

There followed stunned silence then that kind of "oh my gawd" laughter. The parents just smiled.

I'm no pearl clutcher, and I wasn't exactly shocked, but if my 4 year old had told that joke I would have been really embarrassed. I'm not sure who would tell a joke like that to such a small child, or be ok with it being repeated in public. Thoughts?

I don't even get the joke Confused

VanessaBet · 17/12/2017 20:18

I doubt anyone told it to him, he probably made it up on the spot. It doesn't really make much sense and deals with toilet humour - typical 4 year old boy effort!

Lostflipflop · 17/12/2017 20:20

My 10 year old DD told me a joke her friend told her at school because she didn't get it....

What is a vagina's favourite thing for breakfast?

Penis butter!

Shouldn't have laughed.......

00100001 · 17/12/2017 20:21

Yep, he made it up on the spot.

Kids do that. They can't make up jokes.

Ginmakesitallok · 17/12/2017 20:21

It just sounds like a stupid joke which doesn't make sense, but because it includes wee and willies little kids think it's funny

user1471517900 · 17/12/2017 20:23

That made me laugh. He knows what a penis is and presumably thinks thats the only way anyone could pee. Top joke!

Marcine · 17/12/2017 20:25

4 year olds are rubbish at jokes and think penises are hilarious.

2cats2many · 17/12/2017 20:25

I'm struggling to understand your point. Are you taken aback because he used the word 'penis'?

Cupoteap · 17/12/2017 20:27

No ones told him that joke, he's trying his hand at making up jokes and knows the names for things

Rotorevolution · 17/12/2017 20:29

Maybe it’s the word sack = testes which is odd for a 4 year old to use.

woodhill · 17/12/2017 20:30

I think it is cringey, I would feel embarrassed

NashvilleQueen · 17/12/2017 20:30

YABU to be taken aback. It’s not funny and makes no sense. I don’t for a moment thing he was repeating a joke others had told him. It has all the hallmarks of a really rubbish joke made up on the spot by a small child.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 17/12/2017 20:33

Ok op would this joke have been acceptable

Whi doesn't the sack go to the toilet?

Because he doesn't have a willy/tinkle/peepee/whatever cute not actual word for the male anotomy your family uses.

Are you pearl clutching because a 4 year old said penis. You know the actual name for a part of the male body?!

NSPCC actually recommend that you teach your children the actual names because of the number of cases of abuse not being taken seriously because the adult their telling doesn't know what the abuser has touched.

Nope it makes no sence which tells you he made it up on the spot. Willies and bottoms are funny at 4

soundsystem · 17/12/2017 20:33

It sounds like the sort of joke that 4-year-olds make up that make no sense. And penises are pretty funny to most 4 year olds...

DesignedForLife · 17/12/2017 20:34

Sounds like bog standard 4 year old boy joke. Not funny and focused on willies.

f83mx · 17/12/2017 20:37

you'd be embarrassed? because the kid said penis ....? or made a crap joke?.... or?? he's 4 for crying out loud, what is there to be embarrassed about....

MammaTJ · 17/12/2017 20:42

He is barely out of toddlerhood! Calm yourself!

user1471517900 · 17/12/2017 20:44

Also glad that "elves" were put in the quote marks. So we knew they weren't the real ones.

curryforbreakfast · 17/12/2017 20:45

What is there to be embarrassed about? That it isn't funny?

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 17/12/2017 20:46

Yabu he made it up. Kids think toilets are funny. No big deal.

Tippz · 17/12/2017 20:49

I don't get the joke. Confused

MammaTJ · 17/12/2017 20:49

Actually, on reflection, I am impressed he used the anatomically correct word!

Originalfoogirl · 17/12/2017 20:49

Yeah, I knew there would be the po-faced nonsense about “using correct words”. It has nothing to do with that. We don’t really have any other word for it because having a girl it isn’t something which generally comes up much in conversation.

It was more the age of the child telling the joke and the fact the parents thought that was absolutely fine. There is no pearl clutching, just a Hmm at it.

Our girl makes up jokes but any which have that sort of content, she’d be reminded that’s one just for the house, or with her friends etc.

He made it up on the spot. Yes it's embarrassing for the parents, but what are they supposed to do but smile? They can't exactly prostrate themselves in shame in santas workshop.
