Please explain what you do get, don’t get etc and how secure this is.

It means that you are gaurenteed a minimum of 6 hours a week. Anything else will be detailed further in the contract.

Rawhh · 17/12/2017 20:12

No employment is secure until you have worked for 2 years.

Eeyit · 17/12/2017 20:16

I am on an 8 hour contract. Those are my set hours and I am guaranteed those hours. Anything extra is classed as over time. I do not get sick pay and would not qualify for statutory sick pay either as I don't earn enough but I do accrue holidays. No pension contributions either. I think it's a very shitty way for companies to employ people as usually full time hours are available just without the security and added benefits.

Rawhh
Agree not many people realise that you have no real security until after 2 years.

TillyMint81 · 17/12/2017 20:18

And when you are off on holiday if you get holiday pay it will only be for the 6 hours.

BertieBotts · 17/12/2017 20:18

IME you'll get social security, sick leave, holidays etc in proportion to the hours you actually work, not just contracted - basically the 6 hours just gives them the opportunity to mess you around, expect you to come in for 30 hours one week, 10 another, depending how busy you are. And if they don't like you they can effectively just write you out of the rota until the notice period is up.

BertieBotts · 17/12/2017 20:19

Must depend on the workplace then - because I tended to get holiday pay based on my average hours from the preceding weeks. I think, anyway.

And when you are off on holiday if you
get holiday pay it will only be for the 6
hours.

Not if the OP has worked overtime she won’t.

You’re entitled to just over 12% of any hours you work back as holiday.

Lollipop30 · 17/12/2017 20:37

Do they have to give you six hours? Can they just write you out the rota if you’ve not worked for a couple of weeks or have turned down anything over the 6hrs?

OP posts:
Eeyit · 17/12/2017 20:42

That have to give you your contracted hours Lollipop

Thehogfather · 17/12/2017 20:46

With very rare exception it's just a way for employers to try and look good, 6hrs means they can avoid being labelled a zero hour employer, but still gives them all the business advantages of zero hours, and the employee still gets all the disadvantage of zero hours.

meredintofpandiculation · 17/12/2017 21:23

Does it mean paid hours or total hours? For example, if you have contracted hours of 8hrs a week, and you do this all in one day, does this mean they have to give you 8 paid hours eg 8am-4.30 pm with half an hour's break, or simply 8 hours, 8am-4pm, so that you only get 7.5 hours pay because your lunch break was unpaid?

PinkHeart5914 · 17/12/2017 21:27

It means you are guaranteed 6 hours work, they have to give you 6 hours at least as that is what your contract says.

As for anything else, that will vary contract to contract
