To ask if I'm too old to move to London?

I'm 28.

I currently live in a fairly large northern city - not from here but went to university here - moved back last year but actually I'm not so enamoured with it.

I've always loved London and visit friends there as much as possible; I'm a real city person. New city just doesn't seem as 'buzz-y'. It's something I've always wanted to do and as I'm getting closer to 30 now/the new year feels like the time.

I'm reasonably established in my career and would be looking at jobs around 35-40k - not loads and would have to share - but I share anyway. Not too worried about home ownership as I do own and let out a house currently. I'm seeing someone but it's such early days I wouldn't be sticking around because of him.

Do you think I'm too old to be effectively starting again? From a social point of view more than anything I guess.

We moved to a new country with a new language in our thirties and have just moved to another country in our forties, I don't see us settling here for ever. It's a big world make the most of it.

I moved to London when I was 31 with my dp who was 28. We were going to do it all then I got pregnant less than six months later! Grin
That's another story BUT it ended up being one of the best things I ever did in terms of making new friends and building my confidence. I have moved to Birmingham since only because of house prices and being closer to family but you definitely aren't too old.

I moved to London when changing job at 39. Not too old at 28.

Of course you're not too old to do it if it's what you want.
Personally the best thing I ever did was leave London for good. But if you want to be there then go for it.

I'd always wanted to try out London but circumstances didn't allow. Until I was 36 and when the opportunity arose, I took it!

Definitely not too old! I grew up in London but moved away at 18 and didn’t come back until I was 31, when I started all over again in a totally new career. There are tonnes of single people in their 30s here living in house shares, and loads of opportunities to meet new people. Do it!

The tenancy on my current flat ends in June so I think this is a good timeframe - 6 months means I don't have to rush looking for a new job and can choose something right.

My family don't want me to move because they think I'm too 'flighty' - have only been in current city a year - but it doesn't feel right.

Not their life, is it?

Also you're being really sensible - if you can't move around now to find the life you really want, when can you?

FellOutOfBed2wice · 17/12/2017 20:17

Well my Nan lives here and she’s 85 soI reckon you’ll be fine Grin In all seriousness I’ve lived elsewhere but London has always called me back. It’s the best- if most expensive- place and I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

thenewstateswoman · 17/12/2017 20:42

I moved to London at 31 with no job or money and ten years later I find it hard to think about living anywhere else. Do it!
