Having decided too live without a microwave I'm struggling to make my morning porridge - have an induction hob. Surely I'm NBU to expect this to be possible. But how? A magic pan? What's secret?

Medium heat keep stirring.

CCMcGarry · 17/12/2017 08:54

Just like scrambled eggs you need to keep stirring... Never leave it to 'catch'

NurseButtercup · 17/12/2017 08:57

In addition to the advice upthread, good quality non stick pans are your friend.

TotemIcePole · 17/12/2017 08:57

Use a slow Cooker, overnight, lovely local organic creamy milk in the porridge ready for you in the morning, with fresh nutmeg.

I have just had stale shredded wheat

Gruach · 17/12/2017 08:58

Heavy base to your saucepan. No more than medium heat. Judicious stirring.

But it isn't ready until it starts sticking to the pan.

Hairgician · 17/12/2017 09:02

Low to medium heat. Make sure you have enough liquid in. Should be quite runny to start then will thicken. Also make sure you use the right size pan for amount you are making.
My dp does this nearly everytime he makes porridge. Never enough milk in then pisses about the kitchen leaving it to stick. His always ends up like wallpaper paste😂😂

Penfold007 · 17/12/2017 09:05

Once the water/milk and oats start to simmer turn the heat right down and stir frequently. You can't leave porridge unattended. The more milk the higher the chances of sticking but a good nonstick pan can help.

You need a porringer. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0001IWY96/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ref=plSrch&keywords=porringer&dpPl=1&dpID=410VVvs4mnL&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1513501672&sr=8-1

Much cheaper than a divorce after one too many normal pans ruined!

SpartonDregs · 17/12/2017 09:11

I've never burnt porridge on the hob. What are you doing to it?

Whatamuddleduck · 17/12/2017 10:09

Half cup oats, half cup milk, half cup water. Medium heat, stir with wooden spoon/spatula as soon as milk beyond warm. When starting to bubble take off heat and stir. If doesn't look ready within around a minute put back on heat. Repeat until ready. Put water in pan immediately after serving and leave to soak whilst eating.
Seems to work every time.

Cadsuane · 17/12/2017 10:20

And after you cook soaking the pot in COLD water and leaving it for a while makes it much easier to clean. Leave it long enough that the porridge should be floating off the sides and bottom.

DH likes the crispy bit when it sticks. I don't where I went wrong with that man... but then I like pasta when it gets like that.
