...to not have eaten this pink chicken

I know I'm not being unreasonable really here, and nobody has told me that I am, but I'd love a sense-check as to what other people think.

I am emetophobic and, as a result, I have some issues with food. The phobia has got worse since having children and now, if I'm eating out (regardless of whether or not there are kids present) I just won't order certain things, e.g. chicken. Ironic, as chicken is a real favourite of mine.

I am having CBT and have targets set each week. This week, a target was to eat chicken as part of a meal out (the therapist knew I was eating out tonight).

So I ordered a chicken wings starter. When they arrived, I cut into them and they were bloody near the bone, like the pic attached.

I sent them back. The waitress and supervisor, who were very nice about it, said it was sous vide chicken and sometimes that came out bloody near the bone but was perfectly safe.

I should add that this is a very highly thought of place (food hygiene rating: 5; stellar TripAdvisor reviews; we go there a lot). But I just couldn't get my head round eating pink chicken. They were fine about this and understood completely but I did feel like I'd failed in terms of my therapy goals.

When I got home I googled sous vide chicken and apparently it is totally normal for it to be pink like that. The pic attached is from an article written by a scientist explaining why it's still safe. But it looks all wrong to me.

So was I being unreasonable not to have eaten it? Would you have?

"sous vide" suggests "vacuum packed" to me.

And the cooking method seems to be "boil in the bag."

Is there more to it?

ragged · 17/12/2017 00:28

Article here, Piglet.
It means cooking for a very long period at somewhat lower temp (compared to more conventional baking).
Looks delish. Must remember the phrase.

Crispbutty · 17/12/2017 00:32

Sous vide is slowly at lower temp than usual to get the product up to an even temperature from core to exterior then take out of the bag and sear to finish it.

Fine for fish and red meat but not for poultry in my opinion.

AlexanderHamilton · 17/12/2017 00:33

I stopped Dd from eating chicken wings on holiday that looked like that (fellow emetophobe)

Janetjanetjanet · 17/12/2017 00:35

Sous vide = sous shit.

ProseccoMamam · 17/12/2017 00:36

The chicken isn't even pink it's bloody red (literally)

Nobody in their right mind would eat that, it looks like they spray painted it brown, that hasn't been cooked for more than 40 seconds surely?? Looks like it was dipped in kettle water and then plated Confused

Crispbutty · 17/12/2017 00:38

Prosecco, I think you’ve made the same mistake I did. That photo isn’t ops actual meal. She did explain in the op but I missed that bit at first too.

EduCated · 17/12/2017 00:41

I generally consider myself pretty hardy when it comes to pink meat, but I would have baulked at that too, even if logic said it was safe, if that makes sense?

BulletFox · 17/12/2017 00:43

Mumsy no she was saying it was similar.

Smeag if you live chicken I'd get a nice one and roast and enjoy at home.

BulletFox · 17/12/2017 00:44

*live chicken, bloody hell, love chicken

PumpkinSquash · 17/12/2017 00:56

Majestic - no, that's not my actual meal (I didn't take a pic); just some sous vide chicken wings I found on the internet that looked very similar.

OK, how are we supposed to give a verdict on what you actually ate if it's just a picture pulled off the internet?!
What you actually ate could be a lot more cooked than what is shown there.
I retract my YANBU if you haven't actually shown an accurate description in the first place.
YABU.

BulletFox · 17/12/2017 00:58

Pumpkin but it's pink Grin

OP posted a random picture off the internet. So could have been anything that they really had.

BulletFox · 17/12/2017 01:03

But it was pink it was pink it was pink! And she has a phobia! It might not have been an exact photo but she said!

Omg is it a new mumsnet law to provide exact photographic evidence at all times...? Hmmm...?

LolitaLempicka · 17/12/2017 01:14

I had medium rare pork recently on the recommendation of the waiter. It was bloody delicious. I don't much like chicken, but I tend to blindly follow whatever the waiters tell me, so I probably would have eaten that. (possibly while furiously googling about sous vide chicken under the table!)

EduCated · 17/12/2017 01:14

Oh give over Pumpkin, I'm working on the basis that OP is capable of saying whether a picture is similar or not.

Maybe it was even pinker, who fucking knows?

PumpkinSquash · 17/12/2017 02:01

Eh? I'm agreeing with you. I'm baulking at the pic too. Who knows what the reality was? No-one does as she's posted a random pic off the internet.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 17/12/2017 02:35

I'm happy to eat rare meat, past-sell-by-dates and food that's been left out of the fridge (I trust my senses, by and large), but I wouldn't touch that with a bargepole!

VimFuego101 · 17/12/2017 02:45

I wouldn't touch it. If what they said about the sous vide is true then they should warn people when bringing it out.

Eightbelles · 17/12/2017 03:03

Didn't realise there was a name for this phobia, I suffer it too.

Would not have eaten that either. That's not cooked. I hate meat off the bone too, the texture is too slimy to me.

ethelfleda · 17/12/2017 04:15

Another one who wouldn't have eaten chicken that looked like that! Had food poisoning from chicken once and it was horrendous.

Ansumpasty · 17/12/2017 07:11

I don't order chicken when I'm out either so I'm with you on that!
On the rare occasions that I've sharped a bucket of wings with people, I can tell the difference between that dark-brown red that touches the bone and undercooked, like in your picture.
You haven't failed at your CBT task. Next time, order something simple like chicken breast.

BedtimeTea · 17/12/2017 07:14

You have not failed, I would not eat that either.

Bigkingdom · 17/12/2017 07:22

Another sick phobic and no way would i touch that chicken!

NotAChristmasCakePop · 17/12/2017 07:27

I would not have eaten that either.
