Unemployed, job-hunting and feeling extremely down

I've been job-hunting, on and off, since last November.

I only really really started job-hunting seriously from around this October onwards though. I'm not 100% sure about what I want to do, and I'm only at the entry-level job stage of a career, so I've been applying jobs that I like the sound of and which meet my skills and qualifications.

I've just heard that I've been rejected for a job that I had an interview for a couple of days ago. I was expecting the best and hoping for the best, anyway, but it still really hurts.

My family members are all getting quite frustrated that I haven't got anything yet. My Mum apparently is surprised that I haven't got anything yet, thinking that if I apply for anything and everything, I'll find a job eventually. Yes, that is partly true, but it's not guaranteed. I just feel like I've let everyone down. And I'm starting to get really worried, upset and frustrated. This is so shit. Sorry, I don't mean to come across as really pathetic and self-pitying. I just feel really worried now that I'm never going to get a job.

Thanks so much if you've read this far Flowers

Keep your head up, changing your C.V can help. Sometimes dishing out the same old tired C.V that isn't getting any responses may actually be the reason. Edit the C.V depending on what job your applying and put a thoughtful, dedicated, relevant cover letter and you will definitely start getting some niggles.

Don't let it get your morale down, you've got this.

It will happen OP! It can be tough. Do you have any clerical skills as this can be a great way to get into large organisations e.g. finance, NHS, universities, charities etc? Temporary clerical jobs can lead on to good jobs. I started my career that way and got promoted along the way.

Do you have a part time job at the moment? If not, working in restaurants, stores etc is a good way to get out of the house and meet people which really enhances communication skills until you find a full time job you like.

I really admire you for trying to get back into work. You have been through a very difficult time and I hope you are feeling better. Good luck!

Try charity job and third sector jobs.

Re write your cv using action words (plenty of articles on google). Prep for interview by saying your answers out loud.

Treat it like a job - work 9-5 on researching and applying for jobs. Go out to the library for part of the day. Schedule in rewards to motivate yourself. Aim to apply to 3-5 jobs per day.

You can tutor. Try tutorhunt and tutorful. Both free to sign up to. I supply teach but have 5 students on the go as well to supplement my income. For GCSE and A Leonel students you just need to ask which exam board and then download the spec from the board’s website, textbooks are exam board specific as well. It won’t give you employ, ent overnight but you might be surprised at interest. It is certainly a profitable second income for me.

Google 'How to find a job using LinkedIn'. DD found her first post-university job that way and recently.

Can I suggest getting “what colour is your parachute” a great book with advice on strategies to find unadvertised roles.

Are you registered with any temp agencies OP? Seriously, you’ll get work within a week. (Maybe longer given the festive period)

LemonysSnicket · 28/03/2018 22:02

It’s shit. It took me 6 months of applications to get my current job and even that is a level below what I was expecting.

It happened eventually though... every time I lost out I thought about it and said that it must’ve just not been the right job. I was right and am now on a great trajectory if not where I want to be yet.
It’ll happen, keep trying x Flowers
