To ask if you're still using high back booster for 8yo?

Dd is nearly 8 and tall - weighs 5stone and is 138cm tall. She is looking a bit uncomfortable in her high back booster seat. Can you get high back boosters for taller children?
I feel loathed to take her out of a car seat as it’s obviously safer, but also would it be a bit daft to buy a new one at this stage?
Just wondered what other people do, I don’t really want her in the car with no protection. She currently sits on one side of the car, should I move her to the middle so she has a bit more distance in case there was a side impact?

Tbf where I live the min height for no car seat is 150cm, but people swap to backless boosters a lot earlier, they aren’t all using hbb until 12. There is no requirement here to use a hbb instead of a booster cushion.

Not saying you shouldn’t use one, just explaining why there might not be that many for sale despite the higher height limit.

Oblomov17 · 15/12/2017 08:12

No. I don't have Ds2 in a booster at all.

Sleepyblueocean · 15/12/2017 08:20

Ds 11 is still in a hbb. I think he is in the high 140's in height. It's the group 2/3 Recaro. He has low muscle tone and the hbb stops him sliding about so I want to keep him in it as long as possible.

MrTrebus · 15/12/2017 08:26

How times have changed. I can't imagine putting a child age 10/12 etc in a high back car seat seems so odd to me! But my baby is 8 months so I've got all these things to come!

Mumsymcmumface · 15/12/2017 08:38

This thread surprises me.

Mine were both in normal boosters without backs from about five. Our youngest is currently seven and nine of her friends or class mates are in hbb.

SokokeCat · 15/12/2017 09:12

MrTrebus....I was always a little OTT about car seats. My kids rear faced until 4.5yrs, then we did extended harnessing until 7, then HBB.

DD is 12.5yrs and has no idea that most of her friends probably aren't in HBBs. She is very light still. We drive a lot in Europe where the car seat laws are different compared to the UK ones so we stick with European ones.
Both kids are comfortable and happy and not complaining, yet!

spurtions · 15/12/2017 09:16

12.5 in a HBB, I’ve never heard of that. In answer, no mine isn’t and I don’t think any of their friends are, ive certainly never seen a HBB in any car with children over about 6. Mind you I’ve never seen any children rear facing past about 18 months.

FlakeBook · 15/12/2017 09:17

My 8 year old is 142cm and 29kg. Still fine in high backed booster. My ten year old is still on a booster seat but not high backed.

FlakeBook · 15/12/2017 09:18

All my eight year old's friends are still using a booster, as are many of my ten year old's.

TrashPanda · 15/12/2017 09:19

Yes, DS1 was 8 in July and still in a hbb, lots of his friends aren't. DS2 is 3 in March and still rear facing.

Arrowfanatic · 15/12/2017 09:25

My DD is almost 9 and very tall and still in a HBB. Tbh, logistically I find the car seats a PITA (I have 3) especially if I need to take passengers and so have to take seats in and out and it's not like they're compact; so I cannot wait until I no longer need them (my other kids are 6 & 5).

That said, my eldest will stay in hers until she can no longer fit so another couple of years probably at least. However I see loads of kids her age not in a HBB and indeed some without seats at all and it worries me. I had to drive her friend around for a while a couple of years ago (so ages 6 going on 7) and he was aghast that I had a HBB for him in the car, said it was for babies.

OriginalRhubarbGin · 15/12/2017 09:25

Our 10yo was still in a hbb and now at nearly 12 is still on a booster cushion. He's about average build looking at his friends, nearly 150 cm and 6.5 stone, but stiil doesn't fit the normal adult seat and belt without that little extra height raise.

SparklyUnicornShite · 15/12/2017 09:40

SokokeCat does that hbb have a 5 point harness. I couldn't see it on the description or the other info. Thanks.
Op my 9 year old is still in hers atm.

MrTrebus · 15/12/2017 09:45

Rear facing til age 4 wow I suppose if the child doesn't know any better/doesn't seem to mind then why not. I just think new cars are already so much safer then when I was young so I don't see the need as much BUT roads are not as safe these days, people drive too fast too close and too aggressively so I do understand the mindset definitely.

SokokeCat · 15/12/2017 09:51

@SparklyUnicornShite no, it's just the usual car seatbelt for the Diono.
Both kids used a Britax Two Way Elite with the harness. They rear faced in that, then we switched them round still with the harness on. I think the harness went to 25kgs.

Yes, at rear facing until 4, it's highly recommended in Scandinavian countries, which is where we were living then. They were upright and could see out the windows easily.

Vinorosso74 · 15/12/2017 10:04

mscherry my DD is the same height and age and I've been wondering this too. I also like the protection from side impact (more so if travelling at speed rather than our local roads).
DD seems ok in the seat and I know 150cm is height in other countries. I think I will try sitting her on the actual seat with seat belt and see how she is-will do this in new year as we have a long journey over Xmas and would prefer her in the seat.

SaturndayNight · 15/12/2017 10:09

People on here will be putting their adult children in booster seats.

SaturndayNight · 15/12/2017 10:11

The car seat industry is an absolute racket.

Wizzwazzwas · 15/12/2017 10:28

12.5yr old, approx 145cm and comfortably still in a HBO. 150cm is minimum for us to move them out. Admittedly the child is v small for age and slim.

We also have a 5.5yr old v comfortably rear facing and loads more room in that seat.

We have the seats anyway from when they were smaller, I cannot see the point in arbitrarily deciding to seat them less safely when they are well within height and weight limits and perfectly comfortable.

elliejjtiny · 15/12/2017 10:36

My 9 year old is in a hbb still, not sure of the brand.

user1494409994 · 15/12/2017 12:02

My lad is in a booster but we took the back off. It means he is still sitting high enough on the seat to make his seat belt safe but his torso is not squashed.

user1494409994 · 15/12/2017 12:06

It's a Graco booster seat that we use. We've bought them in Asda.

BertieBotts · 15/12/2017 20:25

It's not, you'd buy a high back booster anyway, why not use it until it's outgrown? If you've got it right there it seems silly not to.

I wouldn't go out and buy another one once DC are too tall, though. A low booster is fine at that stage. As is fine when you're stuck for space.

They don't do the ones you take the backs off any more. I think they recalled them about 5 years ago because apparently they encourage people to use the less safe option, which I think is silly.

bostonkremekrazy · 16/12/2017 14:11

My 10 yr old sits comfortably in a hbb...as does my 5yr old.
12 yr old hasnt long stopped when transitioned to high school..(thankfully!!!).
We then have a 5 point harness that foward faces, and 2 rear facing 😯 - yes its a faff! But i'd never forgive myself if something happened and they werent buckled in properly!
