To wonder what it's like to go away at a Christmas ?

Every year I say that I'm sick of all the rubbish around Christmas - which I actually like - and swear blind we'll go away next year.
But ....... I just get a feeling that if we went to a naice hotel, we'd be surrounded by staff that would prefer to be at home and not working , and lots of false bonhomie.
Those of you that go away - what's it REALLY like - is my view too romantic ?

I'd love to go away for Xmas but not to a hotel. Rather a nice cottage or dare I say it- camping!

Depends where you go really. Some countries don't really celebrate Xmas. I spent last Xmas in Thailand and it was awesome... we spent Xmas day doing a tour of Bangkok's finest street food. I've actually only had one Christmas at home in 8 years.

It depends where you go. Christmas is not the big deal in a lot of places that it is here, and it’s far less commercialised. I’ve been abroad at Christmas many times: Tunisia is very good as it’s a Muslim country so new year is celebrated instead. Cyprus is a bit grim as it’s full of ex-pats doing British Christmas. Loved the Canary Islands. Madeira best of all, fab climate.

I liked christmas when it was a day not a season. It's just too much and starts too early so by the time it actually comes round I'm sick of it. We went away to a cottage one year and it was bliss. Various friends came and visited but it was lovely, not a hassle. Just a good use of time off and a proper holiday. The kids like staying in their own house at Christmas so now we always go away at New Year in camper van. I can't be bothered with the two major celebrations being crammed in a week apart and the stress and hassle that goes along with it. I can imagine when the kids leave home, me and hubby will just bugger off for two weeks.
