Argos/Sainsburys - Scrooging bastards!

Ruffian · 13/12/2017 17:05

Ds is working at Argos who apparently are now owned by Sainsburys. He gets less than minimum wage due to being 18 despite being expected to everything that an older person would be doing.

He has been put on the rota to work Boxing Day 7 hours. For this he will get time-and-a-half pay so it works out as an extra £20 for coming in on one of the most important public holidays of the year.

AIBU to think this is taking unacceptable advantage? Surely it should be double pay at least??

OP posts:
MrTrebus · 13/12/2017 17:45

Standard for retail,he needs to move out of retail entirely to avoid this basically. Office work or something that pays better if he does work bank holidays.

WazFlimFlam · 13/12/2017 17:45

Now the Minimum Wage has and will be hiked so high

LOL, what planet are you on?

WillowWept · 13/12/2017 17:46

20 years ago Next wanted me to work over Christmas and not only were they not paying me extra they expected me to do two shifts 10-14:00 and 16:00-20:00 so they didn’t need to pay me for lunch or breaks.

I quit

bert3400 · 13/12/2017 17:46

If people didn't shop , they wouldn't open . I think it should be socially unacceptable to shop on Boxing Day ...for ffs haven't people had enough of shopping? . Next expects there workers to go in at 3am ...for the boxing day sale , it is totally awful and I feel sorry for anyone in retail

phoenix1973 · 13/12/2017 17:48

It is shit. But when i worked at centerparcs, all days were nmw. Weekends, bank holidays, Christmas day, boxing day etc. No enhancements. Which is why the sickie rate on those days was so high.

donquixotedelamancha · 13/12/2017 17:48

"Why are they allowed to get away with this shit?"

We are 7+ years into a Tory government. The ability of employees to enforce their rights through tribunal has been massively eroded and what rights there are are being diluted or removed. Previous governments already removed stuff like additional pay for overtime and bank holidays. The unions that might stand up to this have been gradually eviscerated (as much their own fault as the Tories).

This is the will of the people. It's what we vote for again and again. People moan about it, but they blame it on 'lazy young people' and 'immigrants taking our jobs' because the real answers are complex.

Apart from helping him to find a better job and perhaps get some more qualifications, there is only one thing you can do about it. Hopefully we'll all get chance soon.

Pickleypickles · 13/12/2017 17:48

But they arent paying him less than minimum wage they are paying him the minimum wage for his age?

fessmess · 13/12/2017 17:50

I work in a hotel and am on Boxing Day. Normal rate of pay.

Blackteadrinker77 · 13/12/2017 17:51

Out of curiosity OP, do you go shopping on public/bank holidays?

TheHolidayArmadillo · 13/12/2017 17:54

Welcome to retail.

If people didn't go out en masse to the shops on these days, they might not have to work/might get paid better for them.

expatinscotland · 13/12/2017 17:56

Welcome to Gig Economy! This is why I roll my eyes at all the 'just get a job!' 'There are plenty of good jobs all around!' Imagine if you had to live on that type of wage with those conditions?

LOL @ minimum wage being so high . . . 3.1% inflation but hey, leave the interest rate as it is.

AsMenDclaredWomenTheirInferior · 13/12/2017 17:57

When I was 17 I had a Saturday job at Woolworth's and during the time I was there Christmas day & New years day just happene to fall on a Saturday.
So for two weeks I never worked because Woolworth's were closed for those holidays and when I went back the following week, when I collected my wage packet from them, I opened it up and 3 weeks wages were inside and I thought they had made a mistake and overpaid me.
So I took it back to the accounts department and they said I was entitled to 3 weeks wages because it wasn't my fault Woolworth's were closed for those days!..
Yeehah!!..Good old Woolworths..Grin

TheFirstMrsDV · 13/12/2017 17:57

Lucky him

DubaiismyBlackpool · 13/12/2017 17:59

Its pretty shocking, the profits certainly come before people.
It really winds me up if you work in the hospitality trade and only get normal pay for Christmas and New Year. They - the hotels and restaurants - charge a fortune for meals and rooms over Christmas, but fail to pass it on to their staff. It was like that 20 odd years ago when I was working in restaurants, doesn't look like its improved any.

LunasSpectreSpecs · 13/12/2017 17:59

Don't start with the "tory government" rubbish. I was a part timer in Debenhams in 1999 and worked late on CHristmas Eve and easrly on Boxing day without any premium. Standard in retail.

HeyRoly · 13/12/2017 18:00

It's normal to pay under 18s less than over 18s in retail. I remember getting a rise in my hourly rate (from £3.20 per hour - God that makes me sound ancient) when I turned 18 at my supermarket job.

Jumblebee · 13/12/2017 18:01

I didn't get any extra pay for working Boxing Day or any bank holidays. In hospitality or retail. Time and a half is pretty good! But minimum wage for under 18s is appalling!

mumgointhroughtorture · 13/12/2017 18:01

I've took a Xmas job at Argos this year and it's crap . They didn't take most of us on til October then we don't get staff discount for 12 weeks which means we will be finished by then .
We were told would be loads of overtime yet I was took on on a 15 hour contract middle of Oct and haven't had more than 23 hours . Apparently all our stores overtime have had to go to supervisors and stockroom managers .
The week following Xmas I've got 9 hours ! So obviously they've given me 3 hours for Xmas day and boxing day as holiday .

They've been giving us 16 hours over 5 days so most shifts have been 3 and 4 hour shifts which have been rubbish esp with how busy the store has been .
We've had 1 person in stock room picking with maybe 40 people waiting for items . They have cut hours so much in our store it's almost impossible to give a positive service to the customers .
The staff are bitching to each other and it's not been a very good experience this year .
One of the girls has been given all 11pm finishes and she's only 17 which another member of staff said she didn't think that was legal .

I worked at Argos 17 years ago and it was a very different company . Staff have said it's changed a lot since Sainsbury's took over , I wonder what's going to happen in the future .

MissMustBeAMug · 13/12/2017 18:05

When I was a support worker for people with learning disabilities I was often put on shift for the 24hr sleep between 3pm on Christmas Eve and 3pm Christmas Day. I usually got the bank holidays too as we were really understaffed.

I was just paid the standard minimum wage per hour.

I also took the clients on holiday and ended up sleeping on the an uncomfortable sofa at Butlins most years (as they couldn’t afford one with an extra bedroom) and I was only paid for seven hours of each day, despite obviously working for 24 hours each day.

I’ve never worked anywhere where I would be paid extra for doing a bank holiday/unsociable hours.

I loved he clowns but damn that job sucked, I’d have been better off in a shop.

LightastheBreeze · 13/12/2017 18:05

Under 18s can only work until 10, DS used to work st Waitrose and only worked past 10 when he was 18. Pay was the same though for all ages and he got time and a half on Sunday

Ecureuil · 13/12/2017 18:07

HeyRoly I started on £3.20 an hour at JJB sports when I was 17!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 13/12/2017 18:08

What you also find is that when the employee is old enough to qualify for a pay rise, they're suddenly out of a job and replaced by a cheaper 18 year old. Sad

BrokenHollandaise · 13/12/2017 18:08

I refuse to work in retail. I've done it before and been treated worse than crap.

I've also worked 1 Christmas day in my life when I was 18 and was told I'd get a day in lieu for it. I'm now 33 and still waiting!

I've worked nye once in my current job and got £17ph for it.

Petalflowers · 13/12/2017 18:09

Unfortunately, in retail, you have to expect to work bank holidays. In the shop I used to work, if the bank holiday fell on your normal working day, then you were expected to work that day. You were given seven extra day holidays, pro rata, instead.

RhinoGirl · 13/12/2017 18:09

Time and a half is generous for Boxing Day & bank holidays. In my previous job, we got double time for xmas day, boxing day and new years day, nothing extra for other bank holidays. And all workers were paid different minimum wages depending on how old they were. That’s the Law and employers are entitled to do that.
