To ask for medical line for exam?

Have had a fluey type since Saturday and have hardly eaten - left with a severe headache/light sensitive, fever/shaking and constant nausea. Fainted in Tesco yesterday. Also had several bad panic attacks last night culminating in NHS 24 advising me to try get diazepam today. GP surgery have made me an appt for 11am today and halls staff were suggesting I ask for a line for my exam tomorrow. Its only an hour long and multiple choice but I havent touched any revision, havent even looked at PC as hurts too much. Turned phone light off so that's OK. WIBU to ask for a certificate? I have all these exam adjustments in place and have missed a couple of lectures due to illness but sat my first two exams OK, so worried it won't go in my favour. If I submit a line the university are likely to look on that sympathetically aren't they? Another 2 of my flatmates are same and one landed up on IV fluids the other night because of bug, so I know I'm not making it up :( not felt so ill in years , and feel guilty for missing exam :(

Best person to talk to.is your tutor each university is very different with how they treat illness etc. Your tutor can help ypu go about this in the way whuch will get you thw most support. xx

Tell it all to the doctor, including bits like fainting in Tesco and then follow whatever they advise, which I would expect to be to do the exam another time.

Your GP might give you a note documenting your illness - it isn't an NHS service though so there will be a fee, may be up to £50

MargaretCavendish · 13/12/2017 08:55

Definitely agree that you need to talk to your tutor to find out procedure for your university and to make sure you follow it. Where I work, for instance, by far the best course of action would be to get a doctor's note and not take the exam - we have a 'fit to sit' policy which means that if you attempt the exam and do badly we can't then retrospectively take your illness into account, but if you miss it and have a successful extenuating circumstances application then you can sit it later with no penalty to you. Where I was an undergraduate, however, there was basically no way to take the exam at a later date if you missed it, so they'd end up calculating your grade on the exams you did go to if there were special circumstances. You need to know exactly what the procedure is for your university, and no one on here can tell you that.

Have spoken to someone in 'student business' , she said submit medical certificate to university and submit an online form for 'personal circumstances'. Hopefully doctor this morning can sort that form out. I have £50 , would make me v v short but hopefully be OK. Last time I had to do this (previous degree) I did first attempt in August which was easier and passed. That was due to severe period pain, Id happily have that today over this!

Waiting to see doctor. I've had a very odd 24 hours. Submitted a request for an extension on assignment last night then finished the assignment anyway. Now uni asking me what's happening. Going to phone student support when I get in. Sitting in GP surgery in my pyjamas feeling rotten , hopefully can get a line and go back to bed.

Sorry, what is a "line" in this situation??

shouldnthavesaid · 13/12/2017 11:05

As in a sick line, is what GP always called it when got one for work before.

Right, never heard it called that before.

Different areas, different phrases.

Thanks for the answer though as now I know.

shouldnthavesaid · 13/12/2017 12:22

Have full blown flu and a chest infection. Doctor said bed and fluids , have a sick note for exam to pick up tomorrow.

I suspect that this is because, just like where I work, they have to accept and mark the work normally if you've submitted it no matter how impaired you are. I think they'll advise you to withdraw it now, and I'd do that - you can always choose to resubmit the same work on your extension deadline if you want to, but otherwise if you look back on it and realise it was flu-induced mad ramblings you'll be stuck with it. Definitely talk to them if/as soon as you're well enough to.

I will do, spoke to a student advisor who helped me figure out what I need to do next. Frightened as feeling quite breathless but doctor checked my heart and lungs and said all OK. Halls manager came up to check I'm OK, very apologetic about being stuck on 4th floor. Got cardiology at 6pm. Halls suggested getting flatmate to pick up med certificate tomorrow for me, maybe.
