Aargh the itching! I’ve got some Canesten HC Cream, and have also taken acidophilus tablets and actimel.

It started me wondering how anything that you take orally (you can get canesten tablets as well as probiotic drinks etc) could possibly do anything for your vagina? The digestive system isn’t linked to the other parts.

If you get athletes foot, they give you cream/powder not a pill. Confused AIBU to think it’s a con, invented by some middle aged man who thought laydeez were too delicate to do anything down there

Please take my mind off it and reassure me that actimels will magically soothe my itchy fanny...

A dr once told me that eating sugar makes no difference to thrush unless you're diabetic as it ordinarily wouldn't make it into your urine. The tablets really are good tjo

Well all I can say is that the thrush oral treatment tablet that I took when I had it a year or so ago worked a damn sight quicker and more effectively than any cream or pessary I have ever used for it!

I don't know about sugar in your diet - but I once ate toast and Marmite just as I was getting over a nasty bout of thrush.... Ouch.... What was I thinking??

Fluconazole is the best drug for Candida albicans (which is the main cause of thrush) but there are some resistant strains, and also not all thrush is caused by C.albicans, and some other strains of Candida (eg. C.glabrata) are always resistant, so if you take it and have no joy it may be worth going to your GP/GUM clinic and asking them to specify that you want antifungal sensitivities when they request culture for yeasts.

Taking probiotics orally won't do a lot as the chances are that they won't get past your stomach acids.

The live yoghurt on your tampon and around the affected area is a good idea, and also maybe consider (before this) a shallow bath with a few drops of tea tree oil - not too much as it's an astringent, but it is also a very powerful external antifungal.

You shouldn't have sugar in your urine unless you're diabetic, as SleepyHead says

You can get cream and pessaries for thrush but tablets work better as they target the entire area affected.

Drugs are targeted towards different elements of cells after they enter the bloodstream.
There are many many different types of cells so they will not all be affected in the same way. They are targeted towards different cell receptors, different structures, different types of cells, chemical reactions, cell membranes, ion channels, enzymes, etc, etc.

Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine which inhibits an enzyme present in fungus so this is where it exerts its effect.
Inhibition of this enzyme causes an essential component of the cell membrane to not be made.
Therefore reducing the amount of fungus and getting rid of your infection.
