Puking colleague

One of my colleagues routinely throws up in the ladies toilets and doesn’t clean up properly after herself. When I say routinely, it’s on a daily basis, sometimes more than once.
I had to use the loo straight after her today and the smell almost made me throw up myself

I feel sorry for her, I don’t know if she is pregnant or has bulimia or some other health condition, but honestly it’s so gross. Stuff in the toilet bowl, the smell (we have air fresheners and cleaning stuff visible in the bathroom but she doesn’t use them), yuck yuck yuck.
It’s a small office with just the one bathroom so I’ve worked out who it is by a process of elimination.

AIBU to have a quiet word with the Office Manager and ask for a sign or something to be put up. Or should I put a sign up myself?

I don’t want to be known as the dickhead that complained about someone with morning sickness or an eating disorder but is it unreasonable to think whatever you do in the toilet, you shouldn’t leave it for the next unfortunate person to find?

Glad you said something. It's disgusting and unacceptable and a huge health/hygiene issue. No way would I be able to put up with that kind of thing every day at work.

If it's a health issue (either a physical health issue or an eating disorder) then she needs to be offered support and also reminded that leaving the toilets in a state just isn't acceptable.

get your right, when I get a bout of IBS things travel pretty quickly through my body and come out similar to how they went in (TMI).

MyrandaRoyce · 12/12/2017 17:14

Blackteadrinker honestly because it took me a long time to work out who it was, like weeks. Then another couple of weeks to be sure of my suspicions.

And then honestly because once I realised it was her, I felt really awkward about saying anything. Mainly because she comes back to her desk like nothing has happened so there isn’t a natural opportunity to say “you look a bit peakey, is everything ok?” And because I had a suspicion that it was ED related and didn’t want to “accuse” her (wrong word but hopefully you know what I’m getting at)

Daily for how long?

Relatively recently, probably pregnant. Quite a long time, that’s an eating disorder.

get I stand corrected! But whatever it is, I’d rather that I didn’t have to see it.

There isn’t a lot of traffic going past the bathrooms so it’s not like there’s a queue of people who will hear if you flush once or twice or even three times, and no one is policing how long people are away from their desks.

TMI but I always flush this loo twice because I have to take a supplement that turns my wee a virulent day-glo orange colour for about half a day! I’d rather my colleagues thought of me as “Myranda the multi-flusher” than “Myranda who leaves the toilet in a right state”

Alis she’s been here for 4 months, I first noticed it maybe 3, 3.5 months ago. Seems to have got worse recently but I don’t know if I’m now hyper aware of it!

Genever- most but definitely not all. This lady could fall into the later category.

Myheartbelongsto · 12/12/2017 17:27

My god some of you are mean.

Have a private word with her yourself.

I think she is probably unwell then, op. Whilst it is true that bulimics hide their illness by and large, from personal experience I know I lost all ability for subtly when it got completely out of control. In hindsight, I was in dire need of someone to notice.

HermioneAndTheSniffle · 12/12/2017 17:45

Agree with get you can have whole bits of food in your poo.
And actually they alos probably the hardest part to flush.

ragged · 12/12/2017 20:17

I'm a devious devil & would find a way to talk about bariatric surgery around her & see if she fesses up that she has some firsthand experience of that.

Camdenlife33 · 12/12/2017 22:52

Honestly I think you copped out a bit OP.

If she’s throwing up everyday at work consistently for 3-3.5 months she probably needs support. God knows what’s going on but you should have told management who it is so they can gently make sure she’s okay and if there’s anything they can do to accommodate her.

I doubt a sign will change anything but at least you can use the other toilets now

@GetMeOutOfHerePlease

With each sentence you typed that got more and more disgusting.Shock

specialsubject · 13/12/2017 16:04

That's what managers are for! Well done.

HappenstanceMarmite · 13/12/2017 22:46

Gastric band. Would put money on it. Especially as she returns to her desk without seeming unwell and/or shaken up.
