2shoes · 20/04/2007 22:52

OP posts:
againstallodds · 20/04/2007 22:58

yes i noticed that

MascaraOHara · 20/04/2007 22:58

not the same I know but I feel the same about ginger hair

chipmonkey · 20/04/2007 23:32

I remember Jimmy Carr being on Jonathon Ross ages ago and telling him that he was dyslexic.
And then added, "It's just the new work for thick really!" I was so . All very well for him to laugh, now he's a well-paid adult comedian but for children with dyslexia who are living with it every day, it's no joke and all he's doing is trivialising their problem and helping to turn the clock back 40 years.

2shoes · 20/04/2007 23:53

i thought he was the one with the problem tbh

Oh you I have started a thread, but no, you are too busy to see.

Kaloo20 · 20/04/2007 23:56

but children should be in bed, he is on after the watershed........

And adults know better hence it was a J O K E

chipmonkey · 21/04/2007 01:31

I think jokes should be funny. But maybe that's just me. I don't find it hilarious when my bright little ds2 gets all his spellings right when at home with me and gets them all wrong in school because he can't write the letters down in the correct order.

twelveyeargap · 21/04/2007 03:56

If you were a mother in law, would you be offended by MIL jokes? I don't get offended by jokes about me being Irish.

Besides, I think Alan Carr was taking the p'ss out of himself really, not the person with SN.

I suspect if you have kids with SN, you're much more sensitive to things like this as you know how hurtful kids can be to each other and you, rightly, feel protective of them. However, as adults, I think we should be able to laugh it off. It might be in bad taste, but you can always turn the telly off...

2shoes · 21/04/2007 18:21

wow yes sill me ...it was a joke.
of cause i should have laughed as having sn is sooooooooooo funny..............

NOT

OP posts:
mytwopenceworth · 21/04/2007 18:29

who was it and what did he say?

motherinferior · 21/04/2007 18:30

FFS, why are we supposed to 'have a sense of humour' about so-called 'jokes' like this? If you don't mind jokes about Irish people, fine, but lots of Irish people do. And disabled people rightly get deeply pissed off about jokes about their disability.

(And I too feel the same about jokes about red hair.)

2shoes · 21/04/2007 18:30

not just one tbh. the other day one was on (no idea who he was) and started with the lets take the piss out of sn, tv was turned over quick. surely they can find something better to make jokes about.

OP posts:
hertsnessex · 21/04/2007 18:32

jokes will be banned altogether soon i expect in light of political correctness.

2shoes · 21/04/2007 18:32

oh and I do have a dc with cp . as an adults I think it is up to us to show the kids that it is wrong.

OP posts:
motherinferior · 21/04/2007 18:35

Ah, the 'political correctness gone mad' argument raises its head...always a good stalwart for people who want to make lazy-arse jokes which just reinforce stereotypes.

mytwopenceworth · 21/04/2007 18:40

how many black men does it take to change a light bulb?

did you hear the one about the quadriplegic...

a blind man walked into a bar....

what do you call a one armed muslim?

what do you call an autistic guy with a sock on his.......

How many catholics can you fit in a mini?

NOT EVERY JOKE IS FUNNY AND IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE 'NO SENSE OF HUMOUR'!!!

chipmonkey · 22/04/2007 22:35

I don't mind Irish jokes if I feel the comedian is laughing "with" us rather than "at" us IYKWIM. When dh and I were on honeymoon in Jamaica there was a "talent" night in our hotel where guests could get up on stage and perform. One man (British) got up on stage and asked if there were any Irish people in the audience. As dh and I were too shy and scared- to shout out that we were, we just kept quiet. The man then proceeded to tell the most offensive string of "oirish" jokes. It was quite upsetting because I felt that it reflected his true opinion of Irish people and it wasn't nice!

JodieG1 · 22/04/2007 22:38

I haven't seen them but I feel the same about Ricky Gervais and the way he bangs on with disability jokes, not funny at all.

TheArmadillo · 22/04/2007 22:45

YANBU.

YOu can be funny without mocking others for something they can't help.

Mocking people for a physical or mental feature (whether that is the colour of their hair/skin or a disability) is not funny.

IT doesn't mean that all jokes are banned . I adore comedy especially radio comedy, but would turn off and complain at this type of thing. It is not acceptable. It just shows both the person making the jokes and those laughing at them as nasty minded people.

'Political correctness gone mad' is a phrase I hate. I don't think respecting all people whatever their differences (and we all have some) is a bad thing.

This kinda thing makes me really that it is still acceptable.

Dimpled · 22/04/2007 23:22

IMO Ricky Gervais is not making fun of disabled people he is making fun of the political correctness that surrounds them that society imposes that makes it hard to relate to then on a normal, contemporary human level as everyone is so scared of saying the wrong thing.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/04/2007 23:43

AIBU to want to know the punch lines for all of MTPW's jokes?

I tend to agree with Dimpled that he is taking the pee out of PCness, but, i think you have to be v careful as it obviously can come across the wrong way.

Have to say, I am the first to laugh at myself and DP too - he is v dyslexic and cant help but snigger at himself when reading DD's stories at night sometimes.

I wonder - is it wrong to laugh at yourself?

HUnker posted a link on here a few months ago to a youtube song that some folk was tasteless, but the guys singing seemed to be the generators of the pisstaking humour (Lead singer had CP). So, I just wondered....is it okay if you are joking about yourself personally?

electra · 22/04/2007 23:56

omg

"jokes" about disabled people do only one thing, and that is that they encourage the view that is already embedded in society that disabled people are not really human.

What could possibly be F* funny about a disability anyway? I guess it's funny if nobody you care about has one?

Those of you who are going on about "political correctness gone mad" - shame on you!

SueW · 22/04/2007 23:56

I am called Pommie by some people who(m I perceive) are taking the p and I find it v funny.
