Nursery and temperatures!

Hi everyone just looking for opinions...

So last week I got a call from DD's (16mo) nursery saying she had a high temperature of 100.3F degrees which is about 37.9C which on the higher side but nothing I'd worry about. I asked them to give Calpol and DP went to pick her up. When DD got home she was absolutely fine, temp was 36.8C but she wasn't given any Calpol.

Sent DD the next day as she was fine and normal temperature. Got a phone call again in the afternoon to say that DD's temp was 104.3 which is 40.1C!!! Tell them to please give her Calpol and DP goes to get her again. Yet again no calpol! Take DDs temp as soon as she's home about 30 mins after phone call and her temp is 37C?!? DD is absolutely fine apart from an occasional sneeze and winge.

AIBU to think the Nursery aren't taking her temperature properly? Why won't they give Calpol? Even though they agree to on the phone?

At my nursery they’re very strict on medicine administration. Anything I want DS to have in nursery has to be written down in detailed instructions, time, dose, etc and signed for on the day and it’s only valid for that date. Do they have a similar policy they’ve maybe not made you aware of?

Emerald92 · 11/12/2017 12:51

I totally understand the strict control and permissions needed for medicine in nurseries as I've worked with children all my adult life. But why agree on the phone if it goes against policy?

On the first day it wasn't even clear if she had been given anything as one girl told DP she had yet nothing was written on her sheet. So I phoned just in case and was reassured DD has not been given Calpol.

Nurseries won't generally give medication unless it's agreed in advance. You might need to give them a blanket "I'm happy for you to give DD Calpol as required" written instruction.

RedSkyAtNight · 11/12/2017 12:52

They probably agreed on the phone because they assumed they had formal permission - and only when they checked that they realized they didn't.

Steeley113 · 11/12/2017 12:54

I’d be really cross about this. Twice they’ve ‘said’ she has a temp but when you’ve gotten her home it’s miraculously gone despite no calpol Hmm

Moanyoldcow · 11/12/2017 12:59

Next time can you take your thermometer when you collect her? It sounds like theirs might be faulty, especially if she doesn't seem unwell.

Emerald92 · 11/12/2017 13:02

Exactly @Steeley113. Surely a temperature of 40C+ is something to be worried about but they didn't seem fussed. I was panicking thinking I'd have to try and get her to a GP but turns out her temperature was fine. Temperatures don't drop by 3+C in the space of half and hour without any medicine!

How about you speak to the nursery about it.

I personally don't see why they would lie, and you making the assumption that they have lied is very telling. If you don't trust the nursery, don't send your child there.

Also, was your child ill? Was your DD unwell when you dropped her off at nursery? Cold? Teething?

Babies can (occasionally) be hot when they wake up but the temperature falls quite quickly. What time did they call you and was it straight after her nap?

RavingRoo · 11/12/2017 13:07

Sounds like they don’t know what they’re doing. Doesn’t bode well using them if they can’t even use a thermometer.

Steeley113 · 11/12/2017 13:07

I’d be having a word with the manager and getting them to check their thermometer! You’re paying for a service and unless she is genuinely too poorly to be there (not a bog standard cold everyone has this time of year) then they should be providing that service.

Emerald92 · 11/12/2017 13:10

I didn't say that they were lying but maybe not taking her temp properly. There was also huge confusion over the calpol which shouldn't of happened.

DD has her nap in the mornings and we had a phone call after 2. Still, a 40C temperature just from waking up? I don't think so.

You haven't answered my question though - was your DD unwell when you dropped her off in them morning? You wouldn't believe how many parents drop their child off to nurseries after having given them calpol, and when the medicine wears off they have to be called to pick up the child. Same in schools.

Emerald92 · 11/12/2017 13:26

Read my OP it says in there she was fine with no temperature Hmm
