to ask if you would let your child stay for this tomorrow?

Just trying to work out how to prepare myself/the children either way on this one. I know you're not 'my' parents but you're a good representative sample of parents to ask, I think.

I have a school production tomorrow evening. It's an evening of class plays so every child has a 'proper' speaking part (no chorus). The children have been rehearsing in our drama lessons all term and this is their assessment performance. Most of them have learned their lines and worked hard. It can't be rescheduled because this is our last week of term and every evening has a full programme of events on. So it's either go ahead or cancel completely.

I'm in the Midlands/South East area so probably had some of the worst of the snow but it hasn't snowed since about 5pm (might be some more overnight). It's been melting off the trees but still lying heavily on the ground and due to be very cold tomorrow.

I emailed parents this afternoon to say I'll make a decision at lunchtime tomorrow. But I'm wondering if the decision will be taken out of my hands by the parents anyway. Would you let your child stay after school/come and watch them tomorrow for this reason or would you take them home before freezing? We have some boarders and a handful of very local children but most live 10 - 50 minutes drive away.

I've done the stage set up and got all the props and costumes ready today anyway because, if I didn't, I could guarantee it would rain all night and there'd be no snow tomorrow at all and I wouldn't be ready. But I have a horrible feeling I've wasted my time today and the children's time all term!

Is your school definitely opening?

I think if you can go ahead, you should. Good luck

manicinsomniac · 11/12/2017 00:45

Yes, school never shuts as we have boarders and several staff within walking distance.

I will certainly go ahead if at all possible. Thanks!

Go ahead. People call snow day far too easily IMO.

ShoesHaveSouls · 11/12/2017 01:01

Yes I would - providing of course there wasn't another snowfall tonight, and as long as the school is open/willing to go ahead.

It's hard to be the decision maker on this though OP, so sympathies. See what the school says tomorrow and take it from there.

Thank you. According to the met office there's a 90% chance of heavy snow but no sign of anything yet and cars are moving normally outside my house. So fingers crossed.

Heading in to work to help clear the school drive with shovels now. Brrrrr!

Managed to go ahead - all done and children safely off site now :)

A handful of children didn't come in but I had 85% of the cast and did some doubling up.

Really glad I didn't cancel - tending to agree that we call snow day way too easily.

Well done OP!

Balaboosteh · 11/12/2017 20:26

Go ahead! Good luck!

Balaboosteh · 11/12/2017 20:26

Sorry! Caught up! Well done!

My dd would use any excuse to have a day off school - but she would move Hell and Earth to be there for a drama production.

Go for it OP. Good Luck 🍀
