Really sorry im posting for traffic, my ds is nearly 2 and had bad cough for 3 days or so then in the last few hours seemed really breathless and wheezy. Im quite paranoid about this as i have severe asthma and worried there may be a genetic factor.
Called 111 who said to take him to hospital within the hour. He has fallen asleep in his cot and seems to be breathing ok now. I dont want to drag him out of bed in the snow and then waste everyones time at hospital if i have just overreacted to difficulty breathing now that it has settled down.
I'm a single mum and i have nobody to ask for advice. Should i leave it and check up on him every hour or take him down? Or call 111 back and ask them?

Call 111 back and ask to be reassessed, they will tell you the best action to take

Look at his ribs - are the intercostal muscles being pulled in when he breathes? If so, get him seen. If he is audibly wheezing, get him seen. I would sleep in with him so you can be alert to any changes. Breathing difficulties can come on rapidly and can often go unnoticed as the child can get quieter and more lethargic due to lack of oxygen. You know your child best but there were times when my son (similar issues when v little and now diagnosed asthmatic) was very small. Sometimes i would get him checked and all was ok. Other times I would get him checked and his O2 levels would be low enough to require hospital admission. If you are at all concerned, just get him checked over. Hope he's ok.

Thank you both and thank you @netrunner that was very informative. Im usually a logical and togehrther person but just completely lost the ability to think rationally. I called 111 back and they said to monitor him closely and if he gets any worse straight down to a&e. They woman on the phone was nice and it made me cry. I hate being a single mum some days when you are scared and there is nobody here to help or ask advice or even just reasure you that you are making the right decision

Go with netrunners advice. Lee a close eye on him, and any doubt it's better to get him seen than not. I was wavering last year when DS had bronciolitus, but a relative who is nurse took one look at him and said "hospital now", and they were right, he was really poorly and had to stay in 3 days.

Hope your little one is better soon.

If in doubt go. You don't want to be messing about with breathing issues in young children. Similar to the poster above have had many trips to a and e - some ok and some oxygen levels low. Have also had ambulance people telling me off for trying to get him there in a car instead of calling them when I haven't been sure and he has deteriorated quickly. Look at the breathing rate and how hard he is working to breathe.

Glumglowworm · 10/12/2017 20:45

You were right to call 111 both times, be reassured that they air on the side of caution especially with little ones and especially with things like breathing issues.

As PP said, sleep in the same room as him tonight if you possibly can, to better notice any changes. If you are concerned then take him in, or call 111 to assess if you’re unsure, that’s exactly what they’re there for

DontTouchTheMoustache · 10/12/2017 21:17

Yes i will definitely will sleep in with him, i cant stop vhecking in him anyway so i dont mind camoing out on the floor
