To think most people have psychopathic tendencies?

I was reading about a scientist who found out he had the 'brain imaging pattern of a psychopath' which mentioned this Hare Psychopathy test. So I searched for the test that was mentioned.

uk.businessinsider.com/hare-psychopath-checklist-test-sociopath-2016-11/#1-do-you-have-excess-glibness-or-superficial-charm-1

I score 35 on this. Obviously not all people who would be diagnosed psychopaths go onto kill or anything, but its still a bit concerning scoring so highly (though it is true that I have huge issues with empathy and always have done). But then I thought, surely a lot these apply to most people?! So lets find out I guess.

This explains the typical results for people

When properly completed by a qualified professional, the PCL-R provides a total score that indicates how closely the test subject matches the "perfect" score that a classic or prototypical psychopath would rate. Each of the twenty items is given a score of 0, 1, or 2 based on how well it applies to the subject being tested. A prototypical psychopath would receive a maximum score of 40, while someone with absolutely no psychopathic traits or tendencies would receive a score of zero. A score of 30 or above qualifies a person for a diagnosis of psychopathy. People with no criminal backgrounds normally score around 5. Many non-psychopathic criminal offenders score around 22.

I scored 22...

It's quite subjective though. What I think of of normal glibness maybe considered excessive by someone else.

Frogletmamma · 10/12/2017 16:43

I got 2 [EVIL CHUCKLE TO SELF]

LisaSimpsonsbff · 10/12/2017 16:44

It is subjective, even when done under ideal conditions - and doing it online isn't ideal conditions! For actual diagnosis purposes it is always the psychiatrist who fills it out based on face-to-face sessions with the patient, not the patient themselves who self rates on these things.

LaGattaNera · 10/12/2017 16:50

some of the questions ask if you have a history of X or Y so possibly you do have that history but no longer - it could be 20 or 30 years ago. Some people may score 2 on things because perhaps they are depressed rather than psychopathic.

LateToBedAgain · 10/12/2017 17:11

The PCL-r is administered y professionals wth extensive training. It relies on all sorts of information including interview, but also collateral. It is hard to lie your way out of it, as that would likely be discovered. The training takes a long time to complete and only a qualified psychologist is eligible to take the training. The PCL- r also then takes ages to administer so is not often used except with v good reason (labelling someone a psychopath is also not great for them, so again this diagnosis and measure is used sparingly)

RestingGrinchFace · 10/12/2017 17:21

I got five. While pyscophathy is a scale and many people have at least few traits most people don't have most of them. Some psychopathic traits like a superficial charm or an ability to manipulate are actually very useful in life, others not so much. But people who show the major indicators : completely fail to take responsibility for themselves, have little regard for the truth, are very manipulative and have little empathy are quite rare although not rare enough.

christmasrage · 10/12/2017 18:05

OP, people who have those traits can still function normally. They just experience the world differently from other people. You now that other people aren't being overly dramatic, they genuinely feel deeply. In some situations that is an advantage, in others it is a disadvantage.

The key thing, I suggest, is to organise your life to suit you while not causing pain to others. You can make a rational choice to do that, whereas others make make an instinctive, emotional choice to do that.

You may need to look into positive outlets for your anger, and also healthy ways of experiencing positive emotions. Maybe massage, creative activities, music- seek out things that make you feel good as that will help with your anger.

RacingRaccoons · 10/12/2017 18:08

I scored 30 exactly 🤔

MrRayaUmasTurban · 10/12/2017 18:16

I got 2 as well.

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/12/2017 18:17

I can't find the test? Is it a quiz where you tick a box? I just get slides with a statement that x is a trait?

BSintolerant · 10/12/2017 18:21

OP - if you are a psychopath steer clear of highly intuitive sensitive people. They can see right through people who fake emotions.

Have you thought about being assessed by a professional who knows how to conduct these tests and analyse the results accordingly?

Peanutbuttercheese · 10/12/2017 18:28

I scored 26.

I admit to being very good at manipulating people and being able to shutdown emotionally if it's an emotion that isn't useful to me. I am also incredibly charming if I want to be.

clairethewitch70 · 10/12/2017 18:32

CircleofWillis · 10/12/2017 19:12

I scored 4. And that was with being really hard on myself. I’m afraid it is you OP. Out of curiosity were there and questions you scored 0 on?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/12/2017 19:13

I love Jon Ronson’s book The Pschopath Test

I am sure many of us can tick a number of boxes depending on how we feel that day or we shall answer the question in regards to a a particular incident or incidents

CircleofWillis · 10/12/2017 19:14

Iklboo, if you watch The Mary Poppins film carefully I’m pretty sure she would score quite highly on the test.

LemonysSnicket · 10/12/2017 19:16

4 here.

wildbluebelles · 10/12/2017 19:35

Was being very self-critical and scored 4. I am quite scared of these people with high scores....
I have been told i am a bit prickly in real life, but obviously I have a heart of gold underneath Grin
