What the hell is wrong with my head?

Yes, I will go to the GP on Monday (if I can get an appointment) but wondered if anyone could shed some light on my bizarre symptoms.

8-10 days ago the piece of bone behind my right ear started hurting. It's not stopped. It's the lumpy bit of the skull.

The last two days I have had pain radiating down the back of my neck, sort of like muscle pain but not. It hurts to turn my head and it's down both sides.

I am full of snot so guessing I have some sort of virus but what is going on with the bit behind my ear?

Your Eustachian tubes will be blocked

Will I just get given anti biotics or something? I can't google, I am so tired and just having trouble focusing on anything for long.

Thank god I can touch type

I'm not a medical professional but this was my first thought:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/mastoiditis/

MycatsaPirate · 10/12/2017 12:25

Oh that looks fun!

Fingers crossed minor ear infection. Strangely ears are fine, bit weepy but no pain.

Just relentless head and neck pain.

I would second mastoiditis, it can become life threatening very quickly so if anything changes please get medical help rapidly

If the weather isn’t too bad please consider accessing help now, I say this as a retired theatre nurse who has been called in at night more than once for a hot mastoid that has become a matter of life and death

Hopefully it will be just an ear infection but I personally with your symptoms would get checked urgently

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 10/12/2017 12:31

Might be worth trying to see your GP as soon as possible. Poor you, it sounds horrible. I hope you feel better soon.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 10/12/2017 12:32

Cross post with Schroedinger, i would take that advice seriously.

MycatsaPirate · 10/12/2017 12:46

I have phoned 111 and waiting for a call back from a Doctor.

Also thinking mastoiditis. Which can be very serious. Glad you've called in.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 10/12/2017 18:38

How are you doing now OP?

MycatsaPirate · 10/12/2017 19:41

Sorry I've not been back, I fell asleep.

Doctor rang back and was quite honestly bloody useless. He asked for my symptoms and I told him. He asked about my overall health and said he did not have my patient notes. I told him what meds I was on including pregablin because of my spine problems and that I had had two operations on my spine.

Then his 'advice' was to stop taking paracetamol and ibruprofen and he would send a script through to a branch of Asda for codeine. I should start sleeping on the floor and must keep my neck warm. I queried it and said what about my head pain? Could it be mastoiditis and he said no, I'd be very unwell if it was.

Wouldn't give me an appointment and suggested I see my GP.

So I have been asleep most of the afternoon, having a raging temperature and my head is killing me. GP first thing.

Codeine has done nothing for me (except probably make me constipated) so I am going to switch back to paracetamol and ibruprofen which was at least keeping my temperature down to a regular level.

As per my original advice, if you feel in need go to A&E, see your gp ASAP

I’ve known relatively well people end up in theatre rapidly with mastoiditis and as you already take extended forms of pain relief these could be masking your symptoms

Huge sympathy, it’s not much fun when you have long term pain conditions and are also unwell too

some not all gps are far too quick to attribute symptoms to your long term condition over looking indications of other problems

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 10/12/2017 23:05

That sounds very frustrating! Sorry that didn't end up making you feel any better. Glad you're going to GP tomorrow, try not to be fobbed off.
Fingers crossed for you Flowers

Saw my GP this morning, thankfully nothing serious but neck muscles have gone into spasms because I am so tense - basically because my lower back is so painful I'm holding myself rigid to stop it hurting and it's caused my neck to spasm. She also thinks the head pain is due to all my muscles being so tense.

She told me to go back to the ibruprofen and paracetamol and get dp to give me a gentle massage.

That’s good news, I know the spasm pain well as sadly I’m off to see my physio for torture in the morning

You don't have a spot on your scalp do you? Donkeys years ago I went to GP with similar symptoms and it turned out a small spot on the top of my head was the cause. I was rather Blush to have wasted GP's time but he was really lovely about it

MycatsaPirate · 11/12/2017 22:18

No, no spots. Wish it was that simple.

Just me overdoing things and then overcompensating which has basically just pushed the pain from legs/lower back to whole back/neck and head. Although still leaving original pain in legs.

I am slathered in Tiger balm now and the cats are avoiding me. They screw their eyes up when I go near them :o I will stick some more on before bed and hope to get a reasonable sleep tonight. A day of rest tomorrow and then ease back into life the day after. Too much to do but thankfully not as much as last week which was just manic and I should not have been carrying tables and chairs and all the other stuff I did.
