Long story short, had blood test in A&E last Monday, nurse quite forceful and couldn’t get enough blood out of right arm so after 5 mins of prodding with the needle he used the left arm instead. Right arm felt dead for about 24 hours and now has come out in a nasty bruise. Arm is pretty painful, can’t straighten it, can’t lift anything or bend it behind my head... AIBU to go to the GP to check it’s ok? Doesn’t seem to be getting any better.

I have been that bad quite a few times after blood tests and I don't bruise overly easy.
But I've never had too much pain with it.
First time was an easy enough blood test and second time was a nurse jabbing away like mad. I should have stopped her. She did eventually call the doctor to take.

ijustwantfiveminutespeace · 09/12/2017 23:49

Has it got any worse? You need checked out to make sure it's not blood poisoning. That's dangerous. Please speak and see someone asap.

Eatalot · 09/12/2017 23:50

I always bruise a little with blood tests and mentioned it to last nurse during one. She said if vein is damaged it will bleed but if its a lot of bruising or lump come straight back. Id say this classes as a lot of bruising. Phone now.

That looks very worrying. Don't bother with 111, get yourself to A&E tonight without fail!

MollyHuaCha · 10/12/2017 00:15

I have three times has bruising the same as yours from blood tests.

I have a lot of blood tests - about 15 a year for a medical condition . The extreme bruising has only happened when the nurse has made a mistake struggled to get blood. I normally don't have any problem at all.

Each time the bruising just went away over the following few days. But if you're worried about yours, do seek advice. Good luck.

My veins make a huge "popping" noise when they try to get blood from me, and then nothing comes out. I bruise, but nothing like that!

Katescurios · 10/12/2017 00:26

I had the exact same thing a couple of months ago after they tried 7 times to get an IV in. It took about 2 weeks for the bruising to go.

I had very similar bruising when a paramedic tried to get a line into my arm and hand. Looked such a mess and seemed to get worse each day for a while before it got better. I don't think you need to go to A&E as some people are suggesting, call 111 for advice.

Brandbrandbrandy · 10/12/2017 00:31

Definitely go to a walk in

Stoptherideiwannagetoff · 10/12/2017 00:48

Fuck a Duck- i'd seriously go see someone, that reaction is not normal! Hope you feel better soon xxxx

nursy1 · 10/12/2017 00:51

I often take blood, occasionally can leave a bruise if you have had to dig around a bit or patient takes blood thinning drugs ( were you given anything like this in A and E)
That however is not normal. Is the skin hot? I wonder if it’s become infected. Need to see someone I think.

Floellabumbags · 10/12/2017 00:51

Jeezo Nazareth! Did she use a tyre iron on you?

Darcychu · 10/12/2017 00:55

omg that is crazy... it looks like proper hand marks, sorry but they were way to rough, no one needs to grab your arm .. when i get bloods taken (quite regularly) the nurse only ever touches where the needle goes and puts the band on me which i hardly even feel. That is not right at all.

Janetjanetjanet · 10/12/2017 01:01

Fuck me go to the docs ASAP.

Jux · 10/12/2017 01:07

Blimey, I’d go to the walk in centre or minor injuries, asap.

I had a truly magnificent bruise left after an angiogram. Mine wasn’t as dramatic as yours. Please get it checked asap.

HermioneIsMe · 10/12/2017 01:09

TBH I have seen that happening on people, sometimes with much less done to them than what you’ve had.
they usually were people who have had other health issues and tend to come out in huge bruises.

However, I would be more concerned about the fact you can’t flex or lift your arm and that you also have some achyness on the shoulder and hand.
Please have it checked (even if 111 says it’s ok. They won’t have seen the size of the bruise!)

aurynne · 10/12/2017 01:11

I take blood and put in cannulas often and have never seen anything like this! i wonder whether the phlebotomist accidentally pricked your brachial artery? Definitely GP at the least!

gg1234 · 10/12/2017 01:12

Straight to A and E please before you loose your arm .it's blood clotting in your arms go straight

ibuythedailymailtowipemybumon · 10/12/2017 01:14

Definitely seek medical attention ASAP.
A nurse hit a nerve when putting a line in the back of my hand for an iron infusion 3 years ago, I still haven’t gotten the feeling back in it.

Hope you manage to get sorted

AboutAGallonofDietCoke · 10/12/2017 01:14

The bruise could look worse than it is, but the pain is a worry - seek advice ASAP

Battleax · 10/12/2017 01:15

It looks like a blown vein. Shoddy " "needlework" basically. A blood donation nurse did the same to me once. If it's that it's a pain, but harmless, but get it checked to be sure.

TooManyPaws · 10/12/2017 02:24

I had something similar when having a blood test done about 35 years ago. The vein had continued bleeding under the skin and all the soft tissue was bruised and solid with blood, hampering movement. You could even see the outline of the bones as it had bled and bruised between them. I think I had to just wait for it to go - but that was after going to A&E about it.

GinIsMyXmasSpirit · 10/12/2017 02:29

Please don’t wait until the morning, get it checked out right away.
