Worried about incident in supermarket!

missladybird · 09/12/2017 20:00

Today I popped in the supermarket for cat food on my way back from a kids party. Went to the self service check out and paid but it was declined because I had the wrong bank card on me with zero balance. I tried cancelling the shopping but it needed authorisation from staff but they were really busy and were taking forever to come and swipe it off. Dd was restless and tired so I just left the shop but when I got home realised I'd put a pack of pampers under the pushchair and completely forgot. So now I'm worried the store are going to think I purposely left the store without paying.

What do I do? If i go back to the store will they call the police for shoplifting?

Just go back and explain and pay. Relax!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/12/2017 20:04

Phone them and explain and pay next time you're in?

MrsJayy · 09/12/2017 20:05

You can take them back tomorrow and pay for them some people would see it as a perk but my concience would really bother me. I did it years ago with a big washing powder hung on the trolley i thought it was paid for.

formerbabe · 09/12/2017 20:06

It's nothing, forget about it.

iamyourequal · 09/12/2017 20:06

I don't think they would call the police. I think they will accept it was an honest mistake. Unless you live right next to the shop I would just leave it for now. Next time you go in you can explain what happened and offer to pay for the nappies. I feel for you, sounds like a stressed mummy day....lol. I once left asda with a bag of onions on my wrist unpaid for. I'd gone all the way around and through checkout without realising!

LazyLump · 09/12/2017 20:07

I think for theft there has to be a presumption that you deliberately intended to deprive the owner of it permanently or something like that so if you go back and pay that wouldn't be the case and they would probably be nicely surprised Grin.

Council · 09/12/2017 20:07

It will make you feel better so phone them and tell them what happened. I expect they'll thank you and tell you to keep them anyway.

missladybird · 09/12/2017 20:09

I will call them tomorrow. I'm waiting for a knock on the door from the police thinking they've seen me on cctv and have tracked me down. I'm sleep deprived!

Oh op! In the nicest possible way, stop being silly! Don't you watch the news? The police are over stretched...I'm sure they have better things to do!

MrsJayy · 09/12/2017 20:15

I am sure the police won't be knocking at this time on a Saturday chill ☺

BabloHoney · 09/12/2017 20:18

Try not to worry. I took my baby to the supermarket in the pram & put the shopping underneath the buggy rather then in a basket.. got home and realised a pot of foundation I’d picked up had rolled to the front of the buggy and I’d missed it and hadn’t paid for it. Took it in to the supermarket the next day to pay for it and the girl on the counter gave me a “I can’t believe you bothered” kind of look! It was only about £6 but I felt absolutely terrible about it at the time!

ThePants999 · 09/12/2017 20:21

The police won't attend a case of theft from a shop these days unless the suspect is literally still in the shop.

PonderLand · 09/12/2017 20:25

The police took 5 hours to get to my neighbours house after a burglary with a broken window and a pick axe as a weapon so there is no way they'll turn up tonight even if they were aware of it (unlikely).

If you're still concerned then go in tomorrow and pay, no one will be bothered. I've read a lot of threads lately saying similar scenarios so it's a lot more common that you think.

Rainbowandraindrops67 · 09/12/2017 20:28

Go back tomorrow and pay, and then you can sleep easy again Smile

NowIKnow · 09/12/2017 20:47

Did you swipe a loyalty card? They'd be able to track you down from that but I'm sure if you ring or go in tomorrow and explain it should be fine.

abbsisspartacus · 09/12/2017 20:49

Just ring tonight and state your intention to return and pay in the morning you will be fine

BrizzleDrizzle · 09/12/2017 20:55

Don't worry OP, just phone them and explain and call in tomorrow.

Years ago we visited London. Took the kids to the Disney store. I picked them up pajamas and hung then on the back of the pushchair while we continued shopping. We got everything we wanted, paid, walked out (past security on the door) and were half way down the street when I realised the bloody jammies were still hanging on the pram. Shot straight back to the shop and explained, embarrassed and expecting to be yelled at. The staff couldn't give a shit, the security guard just laughed at us. It ruined my day, I felt like a thief...

tararabumdeay · 09/12/2017 21:03

Go back, explain and pay.

One time we'd gone to the nearest Morrison's. Spent all our money on food, and booze for stupid DP who only ever thinks about himself. As we got back into my car there was a fiver there just under the driver's door. I looked around to see who it could belong to but the car park was really too busy. It felt like a gift from above. Went back and bought nappies.

Once the tills went down at the same Morrison's after we'd moved, Christmas. People were asked to estimate what they had to pay. Well, it was the year I was practising mental arithmetic with DS so could tell the checkout person almost exactly. Others were saying '£20' and walking out with a steal.

Some years later I won a trip to New York (one of two in the Country) at the same rural supermarket. That trip changed my life.

I doubt it! Ffs, it's hardly the great train robbery...

PeapodBurgundy · 09/12/2017 21:10

I was in town shopping with DS (20 months), in the pram, when I clocked a stuffed elf in his pram that wasn't his. I had no idea where he'd swiped it from, so I had to re-trace my steps into every shop we'd been in, until I found where he'd stolen it from Blush

I explained to the lady on the till, and paid for the elf (he had pocket money from his Nana, and rarely asks for toys etc when he sees them. I figured he's too young to learn any kind of lesson by me taking it off him). I was mortified and a bit nervy telling her what happened, but she was lovely about it. She laughed, pointed out that it happens all of the time, and was grateful that I'd come back to pay, as apparently most wouldn't.

I'd just pay next time I was in for the nappies now you're back home. If it's going to weigh on your mind, call/pop back in tomorrow.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 09/12/2017 21:12

I have taken things on or in my pram twice! Once a jacket from Next and the other time, it was milk from Tesco!

I'd been through the tills and paid for other things! It's definitely sleep deprivation.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 09/12/2017 21:22

Lordy, they’ll not trace you through loyalty cards.a loyalty card only tracks what was paid for
You inadvertently made a mistake, a genuine all a Guddle moment

blue2014 · 09/12/2017 21:26

Well my mum did this 40 years ago and they haven't come for her yet. I think you'll be alright

IslingtonLou · 10/12/2017 03:15

Don’t worry about police - I doubt the store noticed tbh as they were busy, staff watching you probably thought you did pay as you were interacting with the machine, or may not have noticed the pampers either. They will be very grateful that you want to pay for them and will see it as an accident - most shoplifters wouldn’t come back to pay
