To eat this? Need quick thoughts

Cream cheese in fridge. Well within use by date (february) but states to eat within 5 days after opening. I can't remember how long ago I opened it. 1 - 2 weeks I think. Smells and looks fine. Planning to cook with a bit of it. AIBU to do this? Would be feeding toddler too.

yes, fine

nevereverever83 · 09/12/2017 18:12

or rather -- no, not unreasonable; it will be perfectly fine to eat

Yes, I’d say fine too. I would cook with it for the toddler though.

scattysally · 09/12/2017 18:13

Smells and looks fine I'd probably risk it if it were just me and its more likely to be 5-7;days but give toddler something else. Any chance it's over a week I'd bin it

Roussette · 09/12/2017 18:15

Good grief, yes! The test with cream cheese is if there's mould on it and it tastes alright, you'll know if you taste it

AnnaBay · 09/12/2017 18:16

Would use it without a second thought if it looked and smelled ok.

It goes mouldy pretty quickly ime, so I think it’s probably fine if it looks and smells fine.

Bluetrews25 · 09/12/2017 20:03

I never look at the date, just remove any mouldy bits and carry on with the rest if there's enough left. It's cheese, not meat.

Jenala · 09/12/2017 20:05

Didn't use it in the end. I think I would have done if it was just us. In fact I'm pretty sure we regularly eat it way after it's been opened. However I had food poisoning a couple of weeks ago and I'm feeling a bit sensitive now!

Just for the record, i think it would have been fine, i buy cream cheese every week with the weekly shop as dd1 doesnt like butter in the sandwiches, and if we dont get through a whole pack then it gets eaten for up to 10 days after opening.

If it looks fine, smells fine and tastes fine, it's fine. (for stuff like cheese, maybe not chicken or whatever.)

ToastyFingers · 09/12/2017 21:01

And fwiw, stuff like jam advises you to eat it within a few days, and who throws out week old jam?
