About music in lessons

So as not to dripfeed, DS's class is being taught by a supply teacher, but the same one.

His work has nosedived. Hardly anything is completed and some lessons he has written the date and nothing else.

He has said he finds it impossible to concentrate because of the music. The teacher puts YouTube on and other children sing along loudly and dance and there are arguments about which song next and children run up to the front of the room.

He's in Year 6.

I don't know whether to ask nicely if this could sop as he's evidently finding it hard to concentrate.

Lord above I'd be up at the school asking for this to stop

Valerrie · 09/12/2017 13:09

There's a time and a place for music in the classroom.

Sometimes we'll put loud music on and dance, sometimes I have quiet classical music playing during a writing task.

Playing constant music during lessons and allowing the children to run riot is absolutely ridiculous.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 09/12/2017 13:10

Yes, I would be speaking to the teacher/school about this.

FizzyGreenWater · 09/12/2017 13:20

I'd be asking for a meeting with the person above the class teacher and going bananas about it (in a nice, polite, communicative way of course).

foreverflorals · 09/12/2017 13:20

Thanks, I'm glad I'm not overreacting.

I’m a music teacher and I couldn’t cope with that at all-i’d never get anything done!

foreverflorals · 09/12/2017 13:42

Neither could I cake but I do feel a bit sorry for the teacher ... will have a word first.

It's very hard to be a supply. I'm presuming it's as someone said above and they're trying too hard with what can be a difficult age.

foreverflorals · 09/12/2017 14:00

I know and I sympathise with that but I personally can't work with loud music so I can't really blame DS for being unable to.

Definitely not! As much as it's hard being a supply, it's still ridiculous.

During my teacher training there was a fad for using background music in the classroom to aid learning. I even got the cds, different music for different t types of lessons. Even using some gentle Mozart adagio to aid quiet independent working used to drive me bananas. There was no way I could concentrate with background music. Instead of encouraging the children to be quiet and concentrate on their work, many children would just talk louder to be heard. Using the William Tell overture to change for PE was fun though.
Really feel for your son. Id talk to the head as it’s disrupting his learning.

isthistoonosy · 09/12/2017 22:25

Could he take in ear defenders and make it clear to the teacher the music is a problem.

RestingGrinchFace · 09/12/2017 22:27

This is not acceptable practice in a classroom. Complain to the head.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 09/12/2017 22:57

I can understand quiet instrumental music now and again (my middle child enjoys the HP film scores when he’s feeling the need for a bit of a soundtrack to his work), or even a bit of pop for TT Rockstars (year 6 have been finding eighties hair rock hysterical). I can’t even begin to imagine how horrendous it would be to have to listen to chart music while trying to work all day though.

I’d mention it to the head of phase, as they’re the line manager. If you get no joy take it to the head.

Itsjustaphase84 · 09/12/2017 23:00

I remember some of my teachers doing this when I was at school, putting the radio on. This was about 18 years ago and i felt like the only one who found it massively distracting

thepatchworkcat · 09/12/2017 23:09

Good grief that sounds awful. Definitely speak to school.
