to think ebay selling is a waste of time?

Happy to be corrected - I've got a load of stuff I'd like to sell, normally I'd charity shop it as it's mainly clothes etc (good quality brands, barely worn) but tbh I could do with the extra cash at the moment as I'm freelance/self employed and work has been thin on the ground.

But am I right in thinking it's not worth the bother these days? I did a batch of clothes a few months ago - 4 or 5 things all labels like Boden, Joules, Monsoon, and barely made £40.

Wondering whether to just donate to the charity shop anyway, or to give it another go? Has anyone had any much luck or have any tips?
Nice problem to have, I know!

I sell children’s clothes and my own clothes on eBay, I don’t make much, few Pounds per item, some more some less, but it all adds up. Listing and postage is a faff but it’s money I otherwise wouldn’t have.

I sell toys and other items on local Facebook selling pages.

I’ve made over £1000 in last year just on things dc have outgrown but still in good condition. It’s paying for our holiday next summer.

My sister makes loads of money on eBay. One dress just sold for £65

Somethingfantastic89 · 09/12/2017 11:55

We have tried gumtree a few times, it's not that bad. There are so many sellers of the same items on ebay, plus stuff being shipped from China for just a fraction of the cost, that I don't think YABU.

LemonysSnicket · 09/12/2017 11:57

I got £30 for a 7 year old pair of Vivienne Westwood shoes. I was happy with that, and the buyer was a really lovely woman ( needed for a wedding and the post missed her as she was in the shower the day of wedding! She chased him down the street :') )
I think you have to be quite good at the Title words - so the word 'designer', material, colour, brand, as many pics as possible, preferably modelled on someone and well photographed.

manandbeast · 09/12/2017 11:58

I'd love to know the secret as I've never managed to sell anything on eBay or gumtree!!

NCquestion · 09/12/2017 11:59

Depends on the item sometimes, I’ve made a few pounds on some things and lots more on similar items.
But even £40 is better than nothing when times are hard.
I find branded stuff sells well or items from certain shops (topshop, next etc) so make sure you put that in the post title
I also tend to group items together if they are similar, leggings/t shirts for example

whyhastherumgone · 09/12/2017 12:29

Hmm maybe I will give it a go.
I have two leather jackets (one superdry, one non branded), a Boden winter coat, some monsoon shoes, H&M shoes, a couple of beauty boxes (unopened), a Phase Eight ballgown, three Boden dresses and a fair bit of other labelled stuff, so perhaps if I research a bit and painstakingly put together some better descriptions/titles I might get somewhere this time!
I always seem to end up undercharging for postage somehow as well!

@lemonysnicket good work! Thanks for the tips!

I have a minimum £5 sale price before postage in my mind so I won’t list anything to sell for less than that.

Things below I school fair/ charity shop

PrimalLass · 09/12/2017 12:39

I only do buy it now.

Beaverlac · 09/12/2017 12:40

I use Seajays postal calculator when listing, to check weight and size of parcel for postage.

Nanny0gg · 09/12/2017 12:45

I always found that I got a bit more for 'labels' and I priced accordingly.

So a worn (but good condition M&S) skirt might be £5 but Monsoon at least £10 and more if unworn.

Just make sure you start at your minimum acceptable price and try and sell at the right time of year for the item too.

ScreamingValenta · 09/12/2017 12:53

If you are listing several items and can combine postage, mention this in each listing so buyers know to look at your other listings, which will likely be in the same size/range of brands etc.

Triskaidekaphilia · 09/12/2017 13:09

I made just over £200 for my wedding by selling old clothes I would've otherwise sent to the charity shop or kept and never wore again. A lot of it was goth/alternative stuff though which sells quite well. It can be quite time consuming but if you have a spare day to sort it all out it can be worthwhile.

Hortonlovesahoo · 09/12/2017 13:12

I’ve just started to sell stuff as we’re decluttering and it can be a lot of faff but it’s worth it. You need to have hard skin as some people really do take the piss (£50 for £200 piece of equipment)

MadamPatti · 09/12/2017 14:00

We’ve just had a bit of a clear out and have made a few hundred quid in the last couple of weeks. I tend to just stick things on buy it now and not bother with auctions.

Kids clothes I tend not to bother with but kids shoes all tend to go sooner or later. Ladies clothes are a bit slow at the minute but I’ll just relist until they sell.

Best of all at the minute is my son is selling his old playmobil and has made £100 ish in the last couple of weeks. It has all slowed down now tho on the toy front.

Google “Royal Mail price finder” for accurate postage and if it’s big / heavy consider a courier like my Hermes or collect plus as they’re more competitive than RM.

Your boden / phase eight sHould sell quite well. Every little helps!!

HappenstanceMarmite · 09/12/2017 15:14

I've had success in both Serling and buying with Facebook Marketplace and selling groups. It's free and collection only (though you can offer delivery/postage if you wish. Would highly recommend. 👌

HappenstanceMarmite · 09/12/2017 15:16

*selling, not Serling. Why doesn't Autocorrect work when it would actually be helpful? 😡🤔

BikeRunSki · 09/12/2017 15:20

Boden, Monsoon and Joules should sell well on eBay, as long as they are seasonal and in good condition. There are specialist FB selling group fro Preloved Boden and Joules, which are much quicker and easier than eBay, but have a smaller audience and no feedback to check up on.

CR7987 · 09/12/2017 15:22

I've made £320 in the last month selling crap in the house and clothes (mainly designer brands. I have been amazed what people will pay for some things. Needs a lot of effort with the postage etc but not to be sniffed at. I don't sell anything for less than £10 though so batch stuff.

LemonysSnicket · 09/12/2017 15:30

Also ball gowns and party clothes, plus coats should sell well right now around Christmas season and winter.
I’d put ‘christmas’ , ‘occasion’ and ‘party’ in the titles for evening wear.
