Breakfast on Christmas Day.

Am I the only person who doesn't get this obsession with huge breakfasts on Christmas Day? Nearly everyone I speak to,or read about (yes,on MN too!) say they're having a full English or similar. I was reading an article in the Co-op supermarket magazine yesterday and saw the comment along the lines of 'make sure you have a big breakfast to keep you going and make sure you have plenty of food to give your guests and family'. And this was assuming you were eating dinner at about 2pm. I have always had Christmas dinner at about 5pm,quite late by some peoples' standards, but I know for sure that if I ate a massive breakfast at about 10am and kept eating things like mince pies, sausage rolls and canapés all day,I would not be able to do justice to my dinner? Don't get me wrong,I'm NOT bragging about having a tiny appetite and neither am I slim. I am quite greedy by nature and overweight but I do like to sit down to Christmas dinner feeling hungry and able to eat it all! Or is it just me?

YANBU.

I wondered the same about starters when they came up in another thread.

A special breakfast, sure, but just something to kick off the day really. Then tasty snacks, chocolates, then dinner with all the trimmings, and pudding, cheese and snacks again afterwards.

We have croissants (with Nutella for the children- the only time I buy it), fruit and coffee. None of us can cope without breakfast but we eat lunch at around 1-2 pm, so don't want anything heavy.

I don't really understand why anyone would want/ be bothered to cook a Full English on Christmas morning. However, If you are eating at 5 pm I can see the attraction of a smoked salmon and scrambled eggs brunch.

MrsJBaptiste · 07/12/2017 20:32

I usually make Dench toast

Are you Lethal Bizzle? 😆

DurhamDurham · 07/12/2017 20:33

We usually just make a start on the chocolates

goose1964 · 07/12/2017 20:33

We have smoked salmon with scrambled eggs but don't have dinner until fourish and that's it for the day

Kahlua4me · 07/12/2017 20:33

We have a full English 😀. My lovely fil cooks it by himself for all of us straight after we get in from church.

There are 15 of us, fil has three dc, and he does it all except the tea and toast. It is lovely for us all to be together for the morning before all going to our own Christmas dinners with other sides of our families. Fil goes with one of his dc every year.

Works well for us as we then have our main meal about 5pm and don’t eat again. Well apart from chocolates, mice pies etc etc.....

My DH always said about having a huge fry up on Xmas morning, we did once but it is SO filling. So now it's usually bacon sandwich or crumpet type things.

Where are the Xmas tree crumpets from? My DS would love them.

pandorawithtreaclecolouredhair · 07/12/2017 20:36

I bought my Christmas tree crumpets the other day from Asda and put them in the freezer, in case they're difficult to find nearer to Christmas; they were in the bakery section, near their own in-store baked bread, mince pies, etc.

1DAD2KIDS · 07/12/2017 20:37

Not for me. Who wants to start the day slaving over a huge breakfast and being stuffed before the days started? Plus washing up afterwards. Not me. I provide a quick, easy, light help yourself continental breakfast for the kids and guests (this year featuring the ex, and former in-laws). Then Big old Christmas day dinner at the pub on the end of my street. Then a help yourself pre prepared simple buffet in the evening for anyone who finds some space after the lunch time stuffing at the pub. I don't like to spoil my Christmas day by either stuffing myself or spending hours in the kitchen cooking and cleaning.

Goldfishshoals · 07/12/2017 20:38

We do a full cooked breakfast with bucks fizz, we don't eat Christmas Dinner at lunchtime, we eat later in the day. We don't do canapés like the OP and only a mince pie or cake late at night so nothing between the two meals (which are cooked by different people).

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 07/12/2017 20:39

We usually have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. It stops us snacking and filling up before Christmas dinner.

wink1970 · 07/12/2017 20:42

Bloody Mary + salmon/eggs for us, but only a small amount.

CherriesInTheSnow · 07/12/2017 20:43

Who on earth can sink a full English when there is a massive roast due at lunchtime??? Funnily enough though, I can always find space around 8pm for cold meats, cheese, pickle, bread.......my favourite food of the whole holiday!!

Breakfast for us is pain au chocs (the mini ones if M&S hasnt been hit by what resembles a swarm of locusts!).

Lashalicious · 07/12/2017 20:45

I’m too busy with everything else and Christmas dinner to do much for breakfast. Usually something easy.

Hippadippadation · 07/12/2017 20:45

Ferrerro Rocher for breakfast on Christmas Day is surely the done thing? (God help us the year no one buys us Ferrerro Rocher!! Grin)

Christmas Tree crumpets sound great though, I might do that, the kids would at least eat that. They hate exciting breakfasts, always refuse pancakes, french toast etc, they like Weetabix or porridge!

JellyBeanPaws · 07/12/2017 20:45

For 33 years it’s been tradition in our family to have Poptarts for breakfast, and pretty minimal snacking until the big feast in the afternoon. Now I’m older I can hardly stomach the Poptarts but I see where my parents were coming from when the tradition started all those years ago. It’s something none of my siblings nor I would give our kids normally but because it’s Christmas and so bloody magical, that sugary slice of sickness for breakfast just makes their day even more special GrinGrin

Spangles1963 · 07/12/2017 20:46

It's the thought of all that extra washing up too that puts me off!

maddiemookins16mum · 07/12/2017 20:47

ASDA for Christmas Tree crumpets, they usually run out by 23rd Dec. Get them in the freezer asap (I have two packs).

beepbeeprichie · 07/12/2017 20:47

Maltesers here. The whole box usually keeps me going until the main event. I don't even need a plate Grin

kath6144 · 07/12/2017 20:48

According to mysupermarket.com, xmas tree crumpets are in Asda and Morrisons.

My DS in particular loves crumpets so would love them.

Sludgecolours · 07/12/2017 20:48

Crikey, we have toast and marmite & satsumas. Always busy dashing to church etc.

megletthesecond · 07/12/2017 20:49

Normal breakfast, albeit with a few xhox coins and off to parkrun here.

If I've got to cook Xmas dinner I'm not faffing around with a fancy breakfast too.

Glumglowworm · 07/12/2017 20:50

I always like the idea of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, but as it’s just me with all the other food the vast majority of the smoked salmon packet would go to waste. So I have bacon butties on homemade bread roll
