To want my coffee in a proper cup when drinking in?

I’m sat in the cafe of a leisure centre while my daughter is in her dance class. I’ve just ordered a coffee and the girl serving gave it to me in a takeaway cup. I said sorry but I’m sitting in and could I have a proper coffee cup. She said she has cleared them all away as they close at 6pm. It wasn’t even 5.30 when I ordered it so at least 30 mins away!

I’m seriously confused!

Why does it matter?

JoJoSM2 · 07/12/2017 17:41

I prefer a takeaway cup. I often find that coffee that comes in a proper cup is barely luke warm.

I'm not sure about a leisure centre type environment TBH, but my very favourite "nice" teashop in my very favourite, in the world, holiday destination, had switched to paper plates and cutlery last time I was there. It's not cheap either. I won't be going back.

If I'm paying £7 for tea and scones I want them on a proper plate with a proper knife.

fidgettt · 07/12/2017 17:45

YANBU in that scenario

Santasbigredbobblehat · 07/12/2017 17:45

Fair enough, after all, take away cups are bad for the environment.

woundedbutwalking · 07/12/2017 17:46

YANBU, drives me potty, completely needless waste.

Rollergirl11 · 07/12/2017 17:46

I hate takeaway cups and always end up burning my mouth when sipping through the little hole. I would never choose to drink from one if I didn’t have to.

Not unreasonable at all, particularly as takeaway cups are not recycleable and will hopefully be banned outright at some not-too-distant point.

MongerTruffle · 07/12/2017 17:50

takeaway cups are not recycleable

They can be recycled but they need to be separated from other waste.

Rollergirl11 · 07/12/2017 17:51

I think she’s doing everything in her power to aid (her) speedy exit at 6pm when they close!

A soft play place near me uses paper cups as well. I'd much rather have a real cup. Disposable ones are very wasteful as well..

How dare she!

@MongerTruffle

Ok, I stand corrected: "poly-lined cups are, technically, capable of being recycled - a fact that enables coffee companies to describe them as "recyclable".

However, the reality is this is only possible in a highly specialised recycling facility - of which there are only two in the UK. One of these sites has never actually dealt with a single paper cup - the other has processed a very tiny number.

In every meaningful sense, conventional paper coffee cups are not recyclable in Britain."

Will you be okay? Xmas Wink

Fruitboxjury · 07/12/2017 23:22

I’m shocked at that article, we must use millions of takeaway cups a day??

Chrys2017 · 07/12/2017 23:29

@Fruitboxjury
7 million cups a day, or 5,000 every minute, according to the article.

ByThePowerOfRa · 07/12/2017 23:32

Yanbu. Aren’t paper cups really difficult to recycle too, so especially bad for the environment?

I've worked in a cafe that did this. It was because we weren't allowed to leave pots in the dishwasher at the end of the day and there was no pay once the cafe sbit so it was either put the dishwasher on 30 min before closing and use paper cups or provide proper cups but wait for 30 mins unpaid whilst waiting for the dishwasher. And there was no handwashing either... the owner thought it was unhygenic.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 07/12/2017 23:35

Handwashing the cups I mean.

mrsmayitstimetogo · 07/12/2017 23:37

I now take my own cup with me! Strongly recommend a KeepCup.

Disposable cups are yet another appallingly wasteful habit that our grandchildren will curse us for. Even if they CAN be recycled, the energy involved in making, moving, and then recycling them is huge. Far far better not to use them in the first place.

safariboot · 07/12/2017 23:40

YABU. You should be glad the centre has a cafe at all, and not just a vending machine.

As others have mentioned, it means the employee can leave sooner. They probably have family of their own. It also means the centre saves some wage money, and if it's a council-run centre that means it's saving taxpayers money. Might not be much, but all those not muches add up.

PavlovianLunge · 07/12/2017 23:51

Agree with mrsm, KeepCups are excellent, there’s no waste, and many coffee shops give a small discount for using one.

Crispbutty · 07/12/2017 23:59

"I hate takeaway cups and always end up burning my mouth when sipping through the little hole."

Erm... take the lid off and drink it Grin

julf · 08/12/2017 00:11

Handwashing the cups I mean** 😂

Chrys2017 · 08/12/2017 00:46

I'd been dithering about what to get my gfs for Christmas... problem solved! I have just ordered three trendy Keep Cups and one flowery bamboo Ecoffee cup (for the hippy hot chocolate drinker).
