To think this is really inconvenient ?

So national grid are replacing the gas pipes on my street and in my home.. ( why don't people just stick to the saying if it's not broken don't fix it!) so today is 'my appointment' for them to come and disconnect my gas to do this. So I had to allow them in at 8am this morning ( I told them to come back at 9 as I said I had breakfast and kids to get off at school) so they came and disconnected it and now I have to wait all evening between 4pm-8pm for them to restore my gas supply. So they could come at any point whilst I'm cooking and I will have to cook tea ( gas cupboard is in my kitchen next to my cooker in a cupboard!)
So now my kids will have to eat their tea whilst having strangers come in and out of the house. It's annoyed me! And we have had no hot water all day!
Am I being unreasonable to think this is inconvenient and unacceptable ?

Yes because the workers don’t have life’s either Hmm

Pathetic and pointless comment!

QueenieMum · 04/12/2017 20:28

I'm going to add my two pennies worth - OP the workmen won't be watching you cook, they'll be working. Unless you cook in an extremely unusual way, in which case they might watch for a bit. They'll want to be in and out as quickly as possible.

I dare say working at that time of night & having to go into people's homes isn't the best job in the world but if they worked 9-5 it would take a lot longer.

An engineer could come round tonight but you chose not to let them - it would be inconvenient and tiring but it would be sorted which is what you want isn't it?

Remember workmen like this - they're the ones who go out in all weathers at all times to reconnect a disrupted supply, mend roads, clear accidents, generally do horrible work to make your life easier.

It's been entertaining though OP, so thanks.

Herbcake · 04/12/2017 20:28

You seem to be quite upright about having men in the house. There's no reason why you can't carry on doing what you need to do while they're there.

I'm having work done and there were, no lie, five men in my house at 8am this morning. I still dried my hair, yelled at the kids to clean their teeth and all the other normal stuff.

Itscliffmas · 04/12/2017 20:28

Op - AIBU?

Almost 150 replies if YABU

Op- No I'm not

Hmm why ask then?

darkcloudlooming · 04/12/2017 20:29

I have to have the heating on in the evening because like I said, it's cold! Also because the house is old if we go for shower and the house is cold then we start to get mould on the walls so we need the heating on to keep a balance.. anyways that's a different story but it's not just one day.. the card says they will disconnect the gas again at some point due to more work in the street for the mains.. so we will be back to the same situation next week

How inconsiderate of them, maintaining the equipment that supplies your house with a dangerous and volatile substance.
If you were more co-operative, they may have been able of finish the job, instead of having to leave it overnight.

I understand it's a bit of a pain, but it needs to be done.

Justmuddlingalong · 04/12/2017 20:31

I bet they've drawn straws already.

Theresnonamesleft · 04/12/2017 20:32

Getmeout I asked that about the dh. Seems to be ignored.

Op you had notice. You could have thought about a meal that didn’t require you to be in the kitchen at that point.

As already said your dh could have picked up some of the slack. Unless all of this is woman’s work in which case he needs to come join us 2017.

dontbesillyhenry · 04/12/2017 20:33

God what a moaning Minnie you really are OP! God help you if something actually serious ever happens in your life

arethereanyleftatall · 04/12/2017 20:33

You're never going to understand op, people are patiently explaining to you why yabu and you're just not getting it.
But be warned, throughout your life you will always be On the waiting list for stuff, get poorer restaurant service than another person, be waiting a little bit longer in the dentist waiting room, and yoUll complain about it, never getting that your own negativity is the cause of it.

Roussette · 04/12/2017 20:33

You must have a special type of mould in your part of the world then OP, if it's going to grow overnight Hmm

For god's sake they are trying to keep you safe but you crack on and refuse them entry. You'll gas will be cut off then and you'll have no heating for good.

QueenieMum · 04/12/2017 20:34

Darkcloudlooming I expect another thread like this when they return next week.* Anytime after 5pm & I'm not available after 10pm so just make sure you only post between those times.*

I no longer need to wonder why people say we wouldn't survive another Blitz..,

darkcloudlooming · 04/12/2017 20:34

@Herbcake

It might seem odd to you.. and I understand why you think that because it's your opinion fair enough. But I can't cope with things I expected like this.. it stresses me out.. I hate having to stop my routine for things like this..I don't know why I just Hate it. I don't like ppl I don't know being in the house.. even when it's normal repairs.. so maybe you all had a good laugh at me but we can't all be like you.

To the poster who asked if I have ASD.. no I've not been diagnosed with anything like that.

chuffineck · 04/12/2017 20:34

YABVVVU. Do you not realise that the work is being done to protect you and your families safety? Do you not realise that the guys are doing their job? Do not you realise that one or more of the engineers might have been called away for a real emergency, like someone with a gas leak or CO poisoning?

As other posters have said, you have had advance notice of this.

Grow up.

SilverySurfer · 04/12/2017 20:34

Thought you should know that your drip feeds haven't supported your case at all, just moved you into pathetic mode.

MaidOfStars · 04/12/2017 20:35

Mint thread. Cheers, OP.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 04/12/2017 20:35

You get mould because the shower room isn’t ventilated enough, keep the windows open at all tunes and use the extractor fan if you have one.

Heating on alone does not combat mould growth.

PortiaCastis · 04/12/2017 20:36

Best get things checked or BANG no sodding abode left and then there'd be no brekkers

darkcloudlooming · 04/12/2017 20:36

@HaudYerWheeshtBawbag no but it helps!

OP posts:
HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 04/12/2017 20:37

Debatable - but that’s another thread!

BritInUS1 · 04/12/2017 20:37

YABVU these are essential works, you knew they were going to happen, so you could have made other plans, but you didn't.

You need to suck it up and let them do their job.

darkcloudlooming · 04/12/2017 20:37

@SilverySurfer isn't this 'drip feed' comment getting a little old.. you must be in your 60s then

OP posts:
MooseInEngland · 04/12/2017 20:37

#FirstWorldProblems. OP you sound so self-centred and annoying. Get over it, it’s really not the end of the world. You wouldn’t be complaining they were coming late if you had an issue with the gas.

pangolina · 04/12/2017 20:38

You're being impossible. They are the ones working unsocial hours, well aware that they are imposing on people's lives.
They would have no interest in watching you cook because they would want to finish as quickly as possible and get home to their own dinner.
Maybe when they next come you could make a plan to make their day a little easier, such as, I don't know, letting them do their job?

QueenieMum · 04/12/2017 20:38

Serious question OP - you've never been diagnosed with ASD or anything like that, do you or have you worried that your reactions are different to other people? Do you have anxiety? Could you get your OH/family member/ friend to stay with you while there are strangers in your house if it stresses you so much?
