To think this is really inconvenient ?

So national grid are replacing the gas pipes on my street and in my home.. ( why don't people just stick to the saying if it's not broken don't fix it!) so today is 'my appointment' for them to come and disconnect my gas to do this. So I had to allow them in at 8am this morning ( I told them to come back at 9 as I said I had breakfast and kids to get off at school) so they came and disconnected it and now I have to wait all evening between 4pm-8pm for them to restore my gas supply. So they could come at any point whilst I'm cooking and I will have to cook tea ( gas cupboard is in my kitchen next to my cooker in a cupboard!)
So now my kids will have to eat their tea whilst having strangers come in and out of the house. It's annoyed me! And we have had no hot water all day!
Am I being unreasonable to think this is inconvenient and unacceptable ?

Put this tread in classics!!!

snowsnowsnowsnow · 05/12/2017 18:02

You must have had a letter outlining all this with plenty of warning?

simiisme · 05/12/2017 18:04

YABU. They did our street last month.
Gas is now safer and fewer leaks may even mean lower bills.

notangelinajolie · 05/12/2017 18:13

YABU. Go to the chippy. And if you don't want your children to see strange men send them upstairs - I'm sure they have homework to do.

Esspee · 05/12/2017 18:16

Did we ever find out what daddy was doing to help during this stressful time?

Justmuddlingalong · 05/12/2017 18:17

Probably rocking in a corner somewhere.

RoseLillian · 05/12/2017 18:19

This is hilarious ☺. Are you being serious op?

StealthNinjaMum · 05/12/2017 18:20

Only read the first couple of pages and I wanted to say actually this work can be a complete pain in the arse and it can be inconvenient.

Last year our road got dug up and one day I got told by a guy - with no identification - who I was walking past doing the school run, 'do you live at that house?' Pointed at house. Clearly I felt uncomfortable letting a complete stranger know my house was empty so he informed me my gas would be cut off at 8 the following day outside the house but I'd need to be in at lunchtime to let them in to test it. This was the only notification I received - nothing in writing at all.

The next day they cut the gas off, dh had his shower early, we had no heating / cooker. I cancelled plans with a friend at lunchtime and waited in for them. They didn't come so I had to wander around my street looking for them before school pickup time as it was Friday and I was worried we would have no gas all weekend if I missed them.

I finally found the guy who needed to come to my house and he arranged to come to my house in "5 minutes'. He didn't so I had to pick DC up. Eventually he came round clearly pissed off with me because he was meant to go home an hour earlier.

I know it's important work and op sounds a bit of a snowflake and luckily I'm a stay at home mum but ffs are people who work or have plans expected to drop everything with just 24 hours notice? Or are old people expected to go without heating with no notice? How many people given a verbal 24 hours notice could get time off work because of gas works?

Wow this gives me the rage a year later!

ALittleBitofEverything111 · 05/12/2017 18:21

I would have seen it as a great excuse to get a take away delivered. YABU btw.

Annette69 · 05/12/2017 18:25

Get a grip - seriously.

rwalker · 05/12/2017 18:36

there is a national program to replace all metal gas pipe for plastic can't remember exactly but it was something to do with an explosion killing a family due to corroded gas pipes . should of just let them in at 8 your own fault

Charlie354 · 05/12/2017 18:41

Are you an adult?
Are you serious?
Are you a narcissist?
Have you zero common sense?
Stop whinging and grow up, the world doesn't revolve around your routine!

rwalker · 05/12/2017 18:43

bet you were "missed off the list" due to being awkward i have worked for utility company you have a whole street to do and people start pissing you about making you job to keep them safe even harder

safariboot · 05/12/2017 19:10

If you think that's inconvenient, try being ordered to leave your home in the middle of the night because of a gas leak.

Sallybates · 05/12/2017 19:15

My pipes also being done! Disconnected today as metal pipes rotten! No gas but they kindly left me an electric heater. Can’t fault the service and so grateful there was no explosion

darkcloudlooming · 05/12/2017 19:19

@rwalker no One pisses anyone about.. people have lives!

And yes I did only just get notification on the weekend.

I've just received a card to say they willl be turning it off again tomorrow so the same thing will happen again and it's less than 24hrs notice!

Ours was done a couple of years ago and it was a nightmare. They couldn't do it they way they'd planned so instead had to run pipes through our hallway and out the front wall, and we now have a big gas box next to the front door (the old meter was in the cupboard under the stairs.) They boxed the pipes in, meaning we can't have furniture on that wall as it'd sit 6 inches or so from the wall. They also didn't finish it properly, it was just whitewashed wood with the nails, sealant etc showing. They were running behind on the day they were due to switch the gas back on so in the end it was done at about 10.30pm- the engineer had to use some sort of test machine with a loud alarm so the kids were woken up. On top of that we had several neighbours knocking on our door wanting to speak to the engineer because they could smell gas, or because they hadn't been left a key for their meter box.

MannersMaketh · 05/12/2017 19:24

I would suggest the OP attempt to learn a little bit about dynamic planning.

Jesus - you come across as completely ridiculous to the point you should be ashamed of yourself for acting in such a childish manner.

Get over it, and get on with your life.

LookingforMaryPoppins · 05/12/2017 19:28

Personally I would put the safety of my family first, if the pipes need replacing I would want them replaced! You don’t get second chances with gas leaks!

As for not letting them in!?!? Just think if everyone was that awkward, the poor workmen would never get home on time and get a chance to see their families.

YABU! We don’t have gas, it’s pretty easy to boil a kettle, use a toaster or microwave, I’m sure you could manage or, if not get a takeaway. There really are bigger problems in the world, as for your children having a stranger around whilst eating dinner, I’m sure a simple explanation that the nice gas man / woman is here to ensure you are all safe would suffice and they won’t be unduly traumatised!

OP, now this is meant kindly. You remind me of myself years ago.
Seriously try to make some friends in the area or at school, perhaps parents of your dc’s little chums? People who you can reciprocate little favours with. It’ll pay you dividends.
Workmen, offer them tea, smooth the ground for them, they’ll thank you for it.
Life is give and take and nicer all round if you can work alongside others. Good luck in life.xx

forcryinoutloud · 05/12/2017 19:37

OP, seriously, you sound very immature. You need to look at life's bigger picture and realise what is going on here GAS PIPES ARE BEING REPLACED not because the gas company have nowt better to do but because they want to avoid serious accidents.

This does not enter the realms of 'unacceptable'. Quite the opposite.

CycleChic · 05/12/2017 19:40

I'm sure having your home explode because of a gas leak would be sooo much more convenient for your children.

Biscuit
Tokillamockingalan · 05/12/2017 19:41

OMFG. Back again tomorrow!!!?? This is priceless...... I think they’ve read the thread

ifonly4 · 05/12/2017 19:41

I know it's really inconvenient, but assuming they gave you notice a while ago of this you could have let them know you had to get the kids to school and wouldn't be able to give them access until 9am. If this isn't done you stand an increased risk of a pipe leakage which would cause you to be without hot water and heating for much longer and you can guarantee it'll be during a cold spell. The workmen will know it's teatime for many between 5-8pm and a fair number will be in the kitchen when they call back and they'll just work around it.
