To take my child out of school to see Santa...?

He’s 4, one of the youngest in the class. This year he’s at his dads for the first time for Christmas, so trying to over compensate a bit probably!

There’s a big special Santa event arranged by the local radio station, it’s supposed to be incredible, travels around the country so not available next year.

I booked our tickets back in august(!) and the only available non day time slot left was 3:30... they’ve just emailed saying we need to be there an hour early so need to pick DS up from school at 2:30!
He’s in year R... it’s the 18th Dec. I figure he won’t miss much...

AIBU?!

YABNU! it’s an hour...can’t believd done posters are saying you are being unreasonable !

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/12/2017 15:45

I was going to day yabu but then I saw it was only an hour at the end of the day.

We took a child out of school to go to a MN Harry Potter event. Didn’t impact attendance because we made afternoon registration so nothing to do with the attendance letters (that are pretty much exclusively aimed at term time holiday takers in my school and those with a serious problem with school in general).

I’d go. I wouldn’t lie but equally I wouldn’t ask for permission either.

ConcreteUnderpants · 04/12/2017 15:45

If your time slot is 3.30 and you need to be there an hour early (why??), then you'll need to leave school earlier than 2.30pm, won't you?

PissedOffNeighbour · 04/12/2017 15:46

YABU to call Father Christmas “Santa” Xmas Hmm

Trinity66 · 04/12/2017 15:46

I think YANBU at all and I am a primary teacher. I’d far rather a child missed the end of a day in the last week to do something special with his mother than the alternative. He won’t miss anything educational. It is very hard to contemplate your Christmas without a 4 year old. I hope you go and have an absolutely lovely time.

Well said, totally agree

CheeriosEverywhere · 04/12/2017 15:47

YABU to call Father Christmas “Santa”

Why? Not everyone here is English.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/12/2017 15:48

Oh give it up pissedoffneighbour Hmm

Op can say what she likes whether it’s Santa, Santa Claus or Old Saint Nick you miserable article Grin

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 04/12/2017 15:48

Ah sod it OP yes I would do it in your shoes. He’s 4 years old not in the middle of his GCSE’s!

Go and have a lovely time.

Thesmallthings · 04/12/2017 15:55

Ynbu in the slightest.

He's four.. leaving school an hour earlier ...on the last day....

And he WON'T be the reason the school is cracking down ffs...

Enjoy your day.... and fyi... id have the whole day off.

TheFirstMrsDV · 04/12/2017 15:55

He is four fgs.
Why not?
People are insane about school.
Four year olds shouldn't even be in formal education. This country is bonkers.

Have a lovely time

paxillin · 04/12/2017 15:56

Check what they do at school that day. Last week before Christmas is often super-busy with nativity, Santa visit etc. You will never hear the end of it if the whole class talks about Santa and he wasn't there.

bimbobaggins · 04/12/2017 15:57

Yes I’d do it 100% and wouldn’t even give it a second thought.
They aren’t doing very much anyway at that time of year.

MadisonAvenue · 04/12/2017 15:58

YANBU. Go - and both have a really lovely time!

Ceto · 04/12/2017 16:01

At that stage in the term children are too over-excited to benefit from education so YANBU. But if you have to get there an hour before 3.30, don't you need to collect before 2.30?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/12/2017 16:01

I’m feeling quite happy thinking of how lovely a time you will have and I know I shouldn’t, but I’m enjoying it all the more knowing just how much you’ll be pissing off the sanctimonious nitwits on this thread Xmas GrinXmas Grin

Was prepared to come on and say "no way"

but It's not a whole day so I would!

RedForFilth · 04/12/2017 16:05

Oh God just do it! Personally I would go to one of the many events outside school time but since it's already booked just go!

Emlou07 · 04/12/2017 16:05

YADNBU

He's 4.. & tbh, even if my children were older and I was in a situation where I wouldn't have them over Christmas, I'd still take them!

Enjoy it x

TheHolidayArmadillo · 04/12/2017 16:05

YABU to call Father Christmas “Santa” fhmm

He's only ever Santa in Scotland, or Santa/Santy in Ireland.

Crunchymum · 04/12/2017 16:05

But if you have to get there an hour before 3.30, don't you need to collect before 2.30?

My reception age DC finishes at 3pm?

switswoo81 · 04/12/2017 16:06

As an infant teacher Yanbu. Collect him and enjoy the experience together. Am in Ireland where my class finish at 1:30 every day and 12 on last day before holidays, it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, have kids going do Lapland, in panto performances etc in the next couple of weeks not a big deal at all.

TheHolidayArmadillo · 04/12/2017 16:07

Anyway - I wouldn't, because my children have a terrible past record with not wanting to go anywhere near pretend Santas.
