to think it is weird that Tony Blair is suddenly in favour of radical solutions to the housing crisis?

He is now saying that a Land Value Tax and rent caps should be introduced. Why weren't they introduced when he was Prime Minister then seeing as so much of the housing crisis was caused and perpetuated by NuLabour? Why do so many politicians only raise their head above the parapet with radical ideas when they are no longer in office?

I think Land Value Tax is an excellent idea btw, just don't like it being associated with Tony Blair.

Mothertruck3r If you seriously think there was ever anything like as much social housing as the demand you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

RTB may have been a mistake but it was a democratically popular mistake: see the election results of 1983 when Labour threatened that if they came to power they would give the councils first refusal at the price paid for properties already sold.

Rent caps on existing tenancies would probably be a breach of the LLs' human rights (yes, LLs are human too) and on new tenancies they would lead to houses being sold off for owner-occupation as they fell vacant; nice for some new buyers no doubt but no help to would-be renters.

He thinks he’s the Second Coming and can fix anything.Hmm

LizzieSiddal · 04/12/2017 19:07

But it’s a great pitty he didn’t do something about it when he was in power. I doubt Brexit would be happening if his govt had looked after the people they were supposed to be looking after, instead of the Bankers.

He’s a Tory? Really he set up working tax credits, sure start, created thousands of nursery’s in local neighbourhoods, gave newborns savings, gave parents £500 grant each time they had a child. Plus put millions into social care, gave free bursary’s to nurses, SWs and god knows what else

^^^

No way was he a Tory

Indeed Lizzie and what bothers me is that he did not take a peerage when he quit Downing Street. Lord Sedgefield could not have dreamed of a comeback; Mr Blair might.

Not that he would have much chance of finding a selection committee which would adopt him in Corbyn's neo-Stalinist party!

LizzieSiddal · 04/12/2017 20:42

I do agree Andrew but I do find myself thinking that if he did stop Brexit, he might redeem himself in my eyes. But then I feel quite disgusted with myself Hmm Grin

RoseWhiteTips · 04/12/2017 20:58

What has it got to do with him, pray?

Walkingtowork · 04/12/2017 21:09

Oh thank Christ QuiteLikely I thought I was the only Blairite in the village Grin

After being called it infinite times by my fellow "comrades" for being sceptical over that muppet Corbyn, I watched a few interviews and speeches, read up on New Labour, and they're the best government we've ever had.

Not perfect, but can you imagine if we'd had the Tories in power since 1979? What do you imagine the Tory cuts are actually cutting?!

Tony Blair is the ONLY man to have taken a general election from them in my lifetime.
