Where did this superstition come from?

Is it unreasonable to not believe in these things that make things very inconvenient! Grin

Eh?

19lottie82 · 03/12/2017 20:14

In my 35 years I have never heard of such a thing?

booksandcoffee · 03/12/2017 20:15

Nor me.

Purplepixiedust · 03/12/2017 20:15

a new one on me.

Caulk · 03/12/2017 20:16

My grandmother used to say that! Hadn’t heard if for years. Have you googled it to see where it comes from?

MarthaArthur · 03/12/2017 20:16

I have heard of it not sure where its feom though. Like dont put new shoes on the table.

SparklyScourer · 03/12/2017 20:19

I googled it (after an eye roll from dp) and it says the devil will follow you round all week or something?

Anyway, it was against my will (cut my thumbnail chopping up fruit) so I thought sod it, but just remembered my grandma being horrified once when I was about 16 going a diy manicure on a Sunday!

I've heard of it - from my granny (uber Catholic and superstitious). Along with never having a haircut on a Sunday or Good Friday.

She was a bit iffy about sharp implements on holy days full stop. She used to have the heebie jeebies when I cut my knitting yarn or did any sewing on a Sunday.

Nemesia · 03/12/2017 20:21

Don't cut your nails, hang your washing out, play cards or sew on a Sunday or the de'il (devil) will chase you all week 🙄

Nemesia · 03/12/2017 20:23

Ah cross posts Sparkly, as a teenager I always thought it sounded like it might be fun to have the devil chasing you all week!

SparklyScourer · 03/12/2017 20:27

It now makes so much sense why Sunday’s are for eating, sleeping, being hungover and generally not doing anything? I’ll let you know how the week goes....Grin

AppleTrayBake · 03/12/2017 20:28

Aw, reminds me of my Nan!

Also don't put new shoes on the kitchen table Confused

paddypants13 · 03/12/2017 20:31

I generally cut the children's nails after their Sunday bath! It goes someway to explain their behaviour... Grin

Dippydippydora · 03/12/2017 20:34

Yep my husband says this when I try to cut DS nails on a sunday. I say ok and do it when he is not in the room

SparklyScourer · 03/12/2017 20:34

@paddypants13 Grin not a bad excuse I might use that one this week

I googled and got (I think it is a load of rubbish and I cut my nails this morning before going to preach in church)
Cut your nails on a Monday, cut them for news;
Cut them on Tuesday for a new pair of shoes;
Cut them on Wednesday, cut them for health;
Cut them on Thursday, cut them for wealth;
Cut them on Friday, cut them for woe;
Cut them on Saturday, a journey you’ll go;
Cut them on Sunday, you cut them for evil,
For all the next week you’ll be ruled by the Devil.

SparklyScourer · 03/12/2017 20:42

John so if I just cut them on Tuesday and Wednesday then those gooduns will outweigh the devils shenanigans anyway!

OP posts:
Ttbb · 03/12/2017 20:43

So long as you don't do it after dark Wink

No idea where either superstition comes from (or why you would have superstitions about cutting nails in the first place).

SandunesAndRainclouds · 03/12/2017 20:44

We were never allowed to cut toenails on a Sunday!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/12/2017 20:45

I thought it was a Friday ..... I've been living a lie !

sprinkleofsunshine · 03/12/2017 20:45

I hope not! I've just done mine! Never heard that...

Council · 03/12/2017 20:47

Oh wow, I've never heard this one and my mum is the most superstitious person on earth. No umbrellas up indoors, no walking under ladders, no new shoes on the table. Despite this, we always had our nails cut on Sunday evening after our bath, ready for the week ahead.

I might have to tell her Grin

bertsdinner · 03/12/2017 20:48

Rings vague bells, I'm sure my great gran was a bit funny about cutting nails and hair on Sunday. My mum likes to (tunelessly), whistle and my great grandad used to say she would "whistle up the Devil", if she did it on a Sunday.

StringandGlitter · 03/12/2017 20:48

It rhymes so it must be true.

thisismadness77 · 03/12/2017 20:51

Better that than on my train in the morning... boak.
