Teacher using pictures of class on her own social media

I am willing to accept I am being unreasonable if you think I am but my gut reaction is that I'm not.

My friend is a teacher who uses social media to show the type of activities she is doing with her class. She always takes the pictures before/after school and never includes the children. She follows other teachers who do the same (although some do include pictures of the children with faces blanked out.) She has spotted my dd on her teacher's social media account with pictures of the children on. (Their faces are blanked out) but I am still not happy about it. She knew it was my dd because of her hair bow in her hair which I made!

I have checked what we signed and no where does it mention their images being used for a teacher's own social media. I have seen it for myself and no where does it mention the school or link back to their main account so it's definitely not affiliated with them.

AIBU? Would you speak to the teacher or go to the head? I don't want the teacher to get in trouble but I would like her to be told what is and isn't appropriate without permission!!

I'm not a teacher, nor do I work with children, but I'm not allowed my phone at work.

The faces are blanked out.
No different from the media taking photos and blanking out faces then.

Quick let’s get hysterical.

PurpleMinionMummy · 03/12/2017 13:45

Yanbu op. Just because others wouldn't mind, it doesn't make it ok.

lalalalyra · 03/12/2017 14:16

The teacher is setting herself up for a world of trouble if she's taking photos with her own phone or camera to use on her own social media.
Even if she is blurring faces she has the original images on her phone/camera and possibly her own laptop/computer. That wouldn't be acceptable in any school I've ever worked it.

Uokbing · 03/12/2017 14:17

At the school I'm at this goes against the policy. Any photos taken within school are to be used within school or on school social media (with parents permission) and photos are to be deleted as soon as possible. Teachers aren't allowed to go home with pictures of the children on their devices.

Do you mean personal devices here? It's a flat no for anything on a personal device at all. But we have to be able to take our school I pads with pics of kids home because there is just no way we can get all their online learning journal stuff done in school by the time we have done everything else. You just have to be careful with the I pad and not lose it!

Uokbing · 03/12/2017 14:20

The thing is as well with taking pics of your kids on your own device is that it all links up now as well doesn't it, so any app that can access your 'camera roll' will have access to all these images, it's just way too risky. I can't believe any school allows it now?

TheHeartOfTeFiti · 03/12/2017 14:21

I had a similar issue with a nursery who were allowing staff to use their personal phones in the nursery as they didn’t have cameras. It means these photos may well be floating about on the teachers phone unedited getting backed up to what ever they use. My issue with the nursery was also staff then had phones on them while nappy changing etc, we left the nursery as managements response was we trust our staff, this was just after the case down south with nursery workers staring indecent images.

I would be less worried from a safeguarding POV but I do think it’s unprofessional personally. I wouldn’t expect to see pictures on a police officer’s or nurse’s Facebook of people they’d dealt with, disguised or otherwise. This is no different

Uokbing · 03/12/2017 14:40

Yes most devices back up onto a cloud or Google drive now as well don't they, so it's not good deleting just off the device either, you would have to ensure they are wiped from everywhere every time. Of course the answer is to ensure that schools are adequately funded to ensure that they can buy their own devices for this sort of thing but that's another issue.

As in ‘no different’ I imagine the only reason you’d post work stuff on your Facebook would either because you thought it was amusing or because you were trying to big yourself up a bit about how great you were at your job. Why do these women’s friends need to know what she does at work? I think it’s a bit inappropriate

It’s also a bit unprofessional she has pictures of other people kids on her personal phone. I don’t think she has any sinister intent but it’s unnecessary

daisypond · 03/12/2017 14:59

Pengggwn The reason why my workplace doesn't allow phones at work is partly to do with productivity and partly to do with business confidentiality. In fact, I'd assume quite a few workplaces would take a dim view of staff taking photos of/at their workplace and uploading them on personal social media, even if they were allowed phones.

I am assuming that this FB page isn't the teachers actual personal FB page but one of these 'Mrs C's Exciting Activities FS/KS1' type pages where teachers share stuff they have done. Also does the OP know these photos have been taken on a personal device, is it possible it's in a school I pad?

crazycatgal · 03/12/2017 15:43

@Uokbing I was talking about personal devices and the school devices. The policy is quite strict at my school and basically no device with pictures of children on should be taken home.

BananaSandwichesEveryDay · 03/12/2017 16:49

At our school it is expressly forbidden to take photos if our students on personal devices. It is also expressly stated within the intermediate policy and the staff handbook that photos which include students may not be posted on staff personal social media sites. Pictures are taken on school devices and uploaded to a file on the network. Senior staff then select which pictures are posted on the school social media sites.
