DH licks his fingers to turn the pages of the newspaper.
Every Single Page. (I watched him)
I told him it was disgusting and spreads germs, but he's in a sulk now.

To me, it's right up there with women spitting on hankies to wipe round their children's mouths. yuck.

AIBU?

For context I'm not usually precious about germs, just this. Apparently.

He's not a baby.
I used to stick my toes in my mouth as a baby.
I grew out of it.

*runwalkrun

I manage to turn the pages without licking my fingers, so it's obviously a bad habit.*

Obviously. Hmm

It's really not that unusual. But if you don't like that then presumably you don't kiss him, or share a bottle of water, or a bowl of peanuts. I guess that also means you wash your hands every single time you put your finger in your mouth.

Some divided opinions. that's what I wanted.

Never given it a thought Smile

Lilliepixie · 02/12/2017 12:45

If it's his own newspaper there's no germs

runwalkrun · 02/12/2017 12:46

I don't think I'll change him now.
I expect I have bad habits that annoy him.
and I do class licking fingers as a bad habit or bad manners, like eating with your mouth open.

It's a shared Mail on Saturday. Does that make a difference? Smile

He's sulking in his shed.

I am conscious that I do it if I am counting out worksheets for a class. Paper can be so slippery and hard to separate. I have tried not to do it then fall back into the habit because it makes the job quicker.

pictish · 02/12/2017 12:49

It's nitpicking on your part imo. There will be little things that you do that he doesn't like either. Stop being so bossy and overbearing over nothing. Leave the poor man alone to read his bloody paper however he likes.

LordTrash · 02/12/2017 12:49

This used to make me retch when my mum did it years ago. In my memory of it, she always had a plate of pilchards in tomato sauce on toast nearby at the time, which may have contributed

PenelopePimpleBottom · 02/12/2017 12:50

It's the Mail...full of flob anyway Grin

Rebeccaslicker · 02/12/2017 12:51

He's reading the mail on Sunday on a Saturday?!

c3pu · 02/12/2017 12:52

what about coffee shops where they have complimentary newspapers?
I don't want flob all over my fingers

If you used your hand to open the door to the coffee shop, the damage is already done. Grin

runwalkrun · 02/12/2017 12:52

Leave the poor man alone

Are you male pictish? Wink

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 02/12/2017 12:53

Gross. And why I never touch magazines in waiting rooms!

runwalkrun · 02/12/2017 12:54

That reminds me, men take newspapers into the loo.

A bit of spit doesn't seem so bad now.

I can't turn the pages without doing this.

I didn't have to when I was young. It used to puzzle heck out of me that people did. At some point in my 30s my body changed. I can't easily turn pages like I could 25 yrs ago. Sorry!

runwalkrun · 02/12/2017 12:54

It's the Mail...full of flob anyway Smile

I had a very good use for licking my fingers when I was at primary school: warding off bullies. It would literally send them running, with cries of "Ewwww! Germs!!"

CurlyRover · 02/12/2017 12:55

I do it. I thought everyone did it but it seems not...

PaperdollCartoon · 02/12/2017 12:55

What?! Do you not kiss him? Touch other things in the house? I think you need to learn a bit about microbes - they’re literally everywhere, they’re 3lbs of mass inside of you. A tiny bit of saliva on fingers or newspapers is really a drop in the ocean. The vast majority of microbes (‘germs’) are entirely fine.

palmfronds · 02/12/2017 12:56

Nope you're right it's really disgusting. It makes me feel sick when people do this.

Especially documents at work [vom]

IrritatedUser1960 · 02/12/2017 12:57

I hate it worse than death, it's bad manners and other people might want to read it after he's finished salivating all over it.
In the supermarket recently the cashier licked her fingers to open a plastic bag before putting my shopping in and i was quite within my rights to say can I have one you haven't licked please. She had a streaming cold too - yuck!

gillybeanz · 02/12/2017 13:01

I do this with paper all the time, who carries a wet sponge thing round with them.
People have done things like this for centuries, it's how you build up immunity and stop being such a wuz Grin

The sulking is grounds for divorce though, couldn't cope with that.
