DH says I can't have one and that it will never get it's ass through the chicken house door.

Has anyone got one/a pair as pets?

Its face looks like something off doctor who! And i reckon it would be hard to house train. But put a bow on it and give it to DH on Christmas morning and how can he say no!

Ha ha yes that is true he won't tell me what he wants for Christmas so maybe I should just get him a turkey :)

You don’t need to worry about it getting through the hen house door since they shouldn’t live with chickens! Chickens carry all sorts of worms (even regularly wormed ones) that cause dreadful health problems for turkeys!

However I am with pickley that it looks like something out of Dr Who! I tried to persuade DH into letting me have turkeys and geese to raise for the table, but failed miserably! He says he’s scarred for life since they did it every year as kids!

I tried to make him get me a pig too but that was also a failure. Maybe I need to start smaller!!! Or just buy more chickens- he doesn’t object to those!!!

I had a tree ornament once that said "a turkey is for life, not for christmas".

My meat guzzling family found it hilarious!

Mine live with the chickens quite happily. They are quite noisy though...

i used to work on a farm and turkeys are they sweets animals ever. the males swan about as they are so large it takes them ages getting anywhere. I really did like the turkeys and would recommend getting some (if you live in a quiet area) i used to shout 'gooble' a them and they would repeat it back. they are sweet intelligent birds hate that fact that they are so mass produced for christmas :(

Mmmm roast Ood with all the trimmings on Xmas day. There's an old film where a boy has a turkey as a pet, I think it's Life With Father. It's being fattened up for Thanksgiving but he doesn't realise

I did try for a couple of goats on the allotment but he wasn't having that. I am going tomorrow pick up 2 more chickens BUT I really want a Turkey too, wwwwhhhhaaaa :(

We’d not had our silkies (chickens) long when this ad came out and DS had developed a very strong bond with one in particular.

It almost made me well up...

The sound they make is GREAT.

I visited a place where they had flocks of rare breed turkeys once. A few years ago. I think it was near Oswestry but can't be sure. It was FAB. The birds were great. They all ran up to us as we walked into their fields, and they ran around us all excited, and the sound they made was amazing.

You do need whole flocks of them, though, not just one or two, as they're very sociable; and they can get so heavy they hurt their own legs just by jumping down from perches.

It's worth visiting turkeys if you want to cheer yourself up. They are lovely birds.

They poo everywhere and the one whom I knew was a total sex pest. He was very sweet though and his feathers were so soft.

Several people locally have turkeys but they are really short term pets.

One of the farms near us rears them (for meat) and last year DS (3) was chatting to the Farmer about them (and his sheep) but when we went back there for a walk in January they were, of course, gone

I was thinking of going for a walk there with the children this weekend, not sure if the Farmer will still be feeding them, or whether it's too late .

If DH won't let me have them in the garden, I wonder if the allotment is big enough

piglover I can't imagine trying to get a sex pest turkey to back off! Be like arguing with a swan, you would just have to leg it in the end.

Lol, my ex was once stalked by a sex mad turkey who had fallen in love with his jumper on a camping trip. There’s a great photo of him running away with the turkey flying after him, talons outstretched. Eventually he took the jumper off and gave it to to the bird, who proceeded to mate with it extensively.

I love a turkey.

I imagine they "fly" a bit like a Pheasant .
