My local naice supermarket now sells the nutribullet thingy and a huge selection of smoothie booster powders and potions, all of which look hugely expensive.

Is this the latest fad? Why can’t you just eat veg in the normal way, and maybe take vitamins now and then? What’s the deal with it all being whizzed up?

It's much easier to consume a kilo of vegetables as juice than it is to consume a kilo of vegetables as a solid.

HadronCollider · 01/12/2017 20:45

I use my nutri-bullet to get in veg I usually cannot bear to eat properly, like beetroot, to get the advantage of raw veg that would be unpalatable or to difficult to eat raw like a bit of raw sweet potato or cauliflower etc. Provided you mix it with a decent ratio of the right fruit it tastes great. I also occasionally add liquid omega oil mixes (yuck) flaxseeds, wheatgerm, powdered collagen and even nettles and dandelion picked fresh from the garden or bunches of herbs.

Essentially Its great for adding stuff you know is good for you but can't stand the taste of, or wouldn't get enough of any other way. I'd never drink raw goats milk for eg, but can happily add it to what's in the nutri. Try it OP you can get really creative. Only thing is it can become quite expensive especially if you use organic veg, nuts etc.

My friend has one, she loves it. I'll stick with the juicing Grin

TiklyBooYack · 01/12/2017 20:50

I think when you grow accustomed to it it's easier. A few years ago I used to add in half a lemon or carrot. Now a broccoli, spinach and beetroot (with leaves) is nothing.

wetpebbles · 01/12/2017 20:51

Try a handful of frozen berries to make a healthy slush, add yoghurt etc and seeds...

ferrier · 01/12/2017 20:53

There's also a big difference between juicing oranges and orangeade.

KhalliWali · 01/12/2017 20:54

Juicing is great! Me and DC have one every morning. It's rubbish to say it's lazy. There is no way we would sit there and eat the following yet this (and slight variations of) is what we drink every morning:

  • kale
  • spinach
  • apple
  • cucumber
  • ginger
  • blueberries
  • flax seeds
  • chia seeds.

I started it for health reasons. My iron levels are now fantastic. I wouldn't say it's quick though, would be much easier to pop a pill.

rosesarered9 · 01/12/2017 21:03

There's a huge difference between juicing kale and juicing oranges.

Ollivander84 · 01/12/2017 21:05

I tend to use mine more in summer but it's also good if you end the week with say a celery stick, an apple, half a lemon and some salad leaves in the fridge - one juice!
My favourite is definitely apple, lime, pear, celery, ginger and spinach

BahHumbygge · 01/12/2017 21:14

Nope, your liver processes them in exactly the same way as the sugar content is pretty much identical. I grant you that juiced oranges will have more vitamins, but you can get them from eating the oranges whole... with the full complement of soluble & insoluble fibre that slows down the absorption of sugar. Eat food in its whole state to get the full gamut of nutrients!

Insomnibrat · 01/12/2017 22:10

I juiced for ten days. Ten days with no solid food whatsoever, just juices. I hoped for a huge weight loss, no. 2lbs.
Sugartastic.

MsJudgemental · 01/12/2017 22:20

Look up Jason Vale, the Juicemaster. Juicing enables you to eat vast quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables and is a great way to lose weight and improve your skin. Blending is a different thing altogether.

TidyLike · 01/12/2017 22:21

I use a nutribullet. The kids have a bowl of fruit with every meal and I blend and drink the leftovers. Since doing this I have massively upped my fruit intake. I don’t much enjoy actually eating fruit whole. Using a blender like a nutribullet is way better than juicing because you get all the fibre etc that juicing would remove.

Having said that, the nutribullet comes with a booklet full of absolute bollocks, all about how nutribulletting food ‘may’ be a zillion times better for you than eating it with your teeth. That went straight in the bin.

Basically: nowt wrong with using a nutribullet or similar. But nutribullet ‘culture’ is full of shit.

Charley50 · 01/12/2017 22:34

One of the main goodness in fruit and veg is in the fibre, and in the process of the body breaking down the fibre.. Juicing or blending veg and fruit breaks the fibre down for you, so you aren't getting that benefit at all. You just get more sugar / fructose.
I just eat loads of veg. I don't think we need all that much fruit anyway.

queenofthesheds · 01/12/2017 22:35

Insomnibrat your post is the single most depressing thing I’ve read all day!Grin 2lb? That’s only a biggish poo! Were you juicing pies?

Sorry I know someone has said that already, just thought I'd chime in!

queenofthesheds · 01/12/2017 22:40

Chime away Charley50! I was teetering on ordering a small blender and a box of able and Cole, safe in the knowledge that I’d be thin and glowing in no time. Seems that might not happen.

Innocent smoothies are DREADFUL . As much sugar as a can of coke.

Veg juicing has wonderous effects for many. I watched this really interesting documentary on netflix called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Worth a watch!

BitOfFun · 01/12/2017 22:42

I'm looking forward to inheriting a mini-nutribullet from a friend soon, as she's upgraded. I have an allotment, and it will be a great way to get through the vast amounts of kale and spinach etc that we grow.

BitOfFun · 01/12/2017 22:43

Lol at "juicing pies" Grin

GeeLondon · 01/12/2017 22:44
  • "Using a blender like a nutribullet is way better than juicing because you get all the fibre etc that juicing would remove."

Blending breaks down the fibres so you are getting pure sugar hit. Personally I wouldn't be blending fruit at all after I was advised on this by nutritionist friend. I used to love a smoothie but she put me off.
