To think school sickness policy is a ludicrous?

The same school that have ‘attendance awards’, are always hammering hard to parents about attendance and leave a comment in every school report about your child’s attendance, despite the fact they were off for things that couldn’t be helped such as chicken pox Hmm.

I missed a days work yesterday because DS (7) had been sick once the evening before, most likely caused by overeating but I erred on the side of caution. Explained this to the school when I called. He was fine all day yesterday so I sent him in today because why wouldn’t I.

I was already half way to work when I got a phone call telling me to collect him because it was ‘school policy’ that it had to be 48 hours from the last time they vomited. I was pretty furious tbh. Explained that I was two miles away on my way to work which I was due to start in fifteen minutes, I didn’t have anyone else to collect him and that he was absolutely fine/it wasn’t a stomach bug because he’d only been sick once and wasn’t unwell after- it was clearly either overeating or he’d probably been jumping around too much after eating. They weren’t accepting it, insisted I had to collect him and that he couldn’t be in school. So I had to turn around, call in sick at work last minute which they obviously weren’t pleased about and take him home. DS was also upset because he actually loves school and would much prefer to be there than at home bored with me...

AIBU to think they’re being ludicrously over cautious there and common sense should surely prevail? He’s now missed two days of education and I’ve missed two days pay because he vomited once, two nights ago Hmm. Also worth noting, I had no idea the school even had a policy, this is the first I’ve heard of it.

I can see why it's 48h. But this wont stop everything. Stomach bugs are transmitted in the particles in the air when vomitting, so if they are sick in the classroom they can all get it. But this will happen even if they havent been sick already and been off.
Then there are siblings, in fact logically they are probably more contagious/high risk than the child who has already been sick and in the process of getting over it.
Also some bugs are stomach bugs to some people and colds to others. (Adenovirus can do this). So your child can catch it from the child next to them that only seems to have a cough.
I feel a bit sorry for the kids that are prone to vomitting bugs as not only are they sick but then they have to be off the extra 2 days so missing even more education.
Somewhere i was reading the person said they have 3 kids like 5,3,1 and this is their first stomach bug and only the 3 yo got it.
Well i have 2 kids 5 and 3 and the 2 yo has had 4 sick bugs at least this year alone. The eldest has had at least 3 so far, probably more like 8. And was sick with hand foot and mouth and with fevers from ear infections several times.

There has to be some judgement. For example a child being spun too fast on softplay equipment, feeling giddy and being sick.
Those saying well me/child was only sick once you are mostly then saying you each felt ill before and after though. So you know that is a bug. Shivers/temp/lethargy/tummy ache/off food.
Sometimes you or the kids may only get diarrhoea rather than vomitting and if its only slightly loose it nay seem like youve had too much fruit/ibs etc. The actual definition of diarrhoea is like 3 or so episodes.

My bil managed to give dd2 a bug (he was sick once in their en suite, thought he ate too much chocolate), we made sure he didnt cook after that etc, but dd2 still caught it, she was ill 2+ times a day and at night for about 3 days. However 3 other kids and 5 other adults didnt get it despite dd2 being sick in the lounge etc. We may all have been carriers though i guess or we all happen to already have had it.

I guess the 48h is probably most important for the youngest ones and nursery etc where they cant/might not know the feeling, wont make it to bathroom/ask to go home.
I dont remember there being this rule when i was at school (can only remember secondary), though waiting till you are confident you can make the journey would be sensible.

I’m a teacher - my school enforces 48 hrs but my daughters’ just does 24 hrs. There obviously can be some flexibility!

Common sense is not letting your child pig out, then bounce around until they vomit. Just so OP can avoid this issue in the future.

It's a tricky one. Most schools have the same policy but when you get to secondary school it will be the other way round, with attendance expected unless really ill! Difficult to change the culture between the two! But while I do agree that any potential bug should be kept away, it does drive me mad that schools can't seem to allow parents to know their children. My DD has a very weak stomach and heaves at anything (sight of blood, etc), plus she gets nasty coughs and sometimes 'spits' out stuff or even coughs herself sick at night - def not a tummy bug though! I just don't tell school any more. She once choked on her toast at breakfast club and coughed up a few crumbs, and we were called to collect her and had to keep her off for 48 hours then - I was fuming!! Another boy had heatstroke at school and was sick and they all knew what it was - but still wouldn't let him back for two days. Surely there should be a degree of flexibility for cases like these, and the OPs!

Parents can know best in situations like other medical reasons heat stroke etc but this time of year, and the main reason being they were only sick once so clearly not a bug is just nonsense as proven by countless replies on here
