What would you recommend as a good make up present for a 17yo aspiring make up artist on a beauty course?

I have no idea 😩

A voucher unless it’s your dd and you know precisely what she owns and what she likes.

A set of really nice brushes and some brish cleaner?

How much do you want to spend?

If she's that into it, I would ask her, I think - she will probably have very clear ideas on what she likes.

There's also this place - used to be the famous Charles Fox in Covent Garden - does film and theatre makeup. You can get really cool stuff or day courses here that she might like!

A set of make-up brushes would almost certainly be appreciated. Anyone seriously into make-up can never have too many brushes.

There are some great ones online. I got a set from Elf Cosmetics for £14.50 for my make-up mad niece.

The Iconic oval makeup brushes are gorgeous but about £75. Not sure what your budget is but they'd make a lovely gift I think.

If she were just into makeup (I was obsessed at that age!) I would say any nice brand like benefit or nars or stila. But if she wants to be an artist, she possibly has very set ideas on what brands she likes for what bit. Or she might want something specific like a gel nail kit (she could make some money with that!).

The Anastasia Beverly Hills contour kit, in whatever shade skin she is (light,medium,dark) it's a staple and a must have in most teenage girls makeup bags, and a definite must have for a makeup artist. Also, it's hyped up online and is considered a luxurious item, I'm 20 and it's something nearly all the girls my age post photos of once they've bought it so I think get that

Get her a p louise DVD

Every make up person wants to be p louise.

It's not cheap though I think 50 quid what's your budget.

Ok well the DVD is 80 quid. You can build a Taylor made USB for 50 quid tho.

Don’t think it’s worth getting a plouise dvd, her techniques are already public knowledge and so are the products that she recommends

I think you’re better off getting a gift card as she probably already has specific products that she wants for her kit. If she wants a certain brush, there’s no point buying a random cheap set as it might not perform as well - brushes aren’t all equal I’m afraid

Get her the book "How to Succeed in the Beauty Business" by Ciara Allen (it's on Amazon & Book Depository) - it's a book written by an Irish MUA who has worked on loads of high-profile shoots and London Fashion Week, full of info about how to build a pro kit, how to build contacts, and how to succeed in business. I did a few courses and it's one of the best books I've read related to beauty, it will really help her if she's considering a career as an MUA.

Has she got a good portable makeup case?

Good makeup and brushes cost a lot, so needs to be protected when travelling around. A good quality case, on wheels, looks after the makeup, brushes and other accessories when she transports it back and forth from her course.

Was just coming on to suggest a portable case. Friend of mine uses a fishing tackle box.
