To pay his parking ticket

I had an electrician in today. I was upstairs putting my baby down for a nap, so my mum (who is visiting) let him in and told him where to go etc.

Electrician asked to park in the driveway but my mum was in there already, so she apparently said 'just park across the driveway, it's fine, I always do'. This was on a yellow line! good one mum

So obviously he was ticketed and furious. Wants me to pay his fine. I feel bad as he's basically lost most of his earnings for the job and my mum told him it was ok but a) there should have been enough free parking further up the street and he wasn't bringing heavy equipment so didn't need to be right outside and b) surely it is his job to check parking?

Should I just offer to pay to ease my conscience?

Can you afford to pay it or go halves? If so, I probably would.

If someone told me to park on yellow lines, I wouldn't do it. It's my responsibility as the driver to park legally and safely.

No way would I pay it, and you have nothing to feel guilty about.

I think you should pay his fine. It’s pretty rubbish when you get a parking fine but I think it would be the right thing to do.

Hmm yes I think I would pay because of your Mum. On the other hand I guess the electrician should know the rules of the road and should not have taken your mum's words for it. Maybe 50:50?

Did he do and good job and will you use him again? If you want to keep good relationship I would offer half but I don't think morally you need to.

I agree with b) It's his responsibility to park legally. He's a grown up isn't he!

(Although I think I would be a bit cross with your Mum).

I would have ensured he had space on the drive really, considering he had tools and needs access to his van. I would probably pay it but you are under no obligation to do so obviously.

Well, first off he is responsible for where he parks his car. Secondly, you didn’t tell him to park illegally, your Mum did, and she didn’t force him to, she said that she got away with it.

He can’t blame you. It sucks for him though.

I would pay it, although I don't think you are under any obligation to do so. Unless, maybe, you need any follow up work doing ........

Yeah I'd pay it (or get Mum to!) if someone local said "I always do and it's fine"
But saying that he should have questioned it was a double yellow ?!

My electrician husband says parking is annoying etc and it’s factored into costs.

If he works in London and pays parking charges, it’s factored into his fee if it’s mega high. Or anytime!

It’s part of running a business.

He said don’t pay x

Did he do a good job. Um...well I used an agency. The said easy job, 1h work, pay x (his hourly rate). Ended up taking 3h, and he wanted paying by the hour. Spoke to agency who said just pay the initial amount and they'd handle it with him. Suspect either agency underestimated the job or more likely he wasn't skilled enough (asked a friend in trade who agreed it was a routine job usually taking 1h max).

But the parking thing was shit for him. I think I have to pay

I wiuldn't pay more than half.

He needs to learn you never listen to anyone, always do what you know is right.

Which was not to park on yellows.

Also worried as he's angry and knows where I live...I mean, I'm sure he isn't an axe murderer but then again

Would he have got the ticket if he'd done the job in the original hour?! If he's taken his time on the job then I'd not be paying the ticket (even if you're not paying more than 1 hour).

I’d offer to pay half; I go to peoples houses for my job and even if someone said that I wouldn’t take the chance but also wasn’t great of your mum to say it

I’d offer at least half as your mother explicitly told him to park there so I feel bad for him - he would have taken her word that it’s a safe/legal parking spot.

It’s his responsibility to park legally. Just because your mum said it was ok isn’t a good enough reason for him to have done it!

It would morally be the right thing to do - at least half. Your mother shouldn't have told him it was fine to park there, he shouldn't have taken her word.
