To ask where I can live Monday to Friday

Missonihoni · 30/11/2017 14:07

This isn't an aibu as such but posting for traffic. I have found a job and it's 55 miles away from
My house .

Where could I find somewhere to stay Monday to Friday. Air b&b charge service fees which amount to a lot. It would be for four months initially.

Help please.

Spareroom.co.uk or fivenights.com
But try the commute first.
I used to rent a room out on fivenights and charged £350 per month for an en-suite double room.

Once you've been for the first week with Airbnb you will have met the host so may well be able to negotiate directly. We stayed in Kefalonia this year and the host has asked us to book directly if we go again to save us both the fees.

It might take a few weeks to get completely settled but its worth a try.

billybagpuss · 30/11/2017 15:48

I'm a complete wus, I wouldn't commute.

bnotts · 30/11/2017 15:56

I used to commute on the train daily Nottingham-ish to London - took 1hr 40 minutes plus tube time either side. I did it for a 4 years. My partner commutes nearly an hour by car now. It's only 14 miles - but it is right through Nottingham. I am making him change jobs as the other night it was two hours, we never see him and it's costing us a fortune in petrol.

Butterymuffin · 30/11/2017 15:59

Try the commute first so you can ask new colleagues about good areas to live in. Then spareroom and the other sites will be helpful.

daisypond · 30/11/2017 16:11

It's not necessarily the distance that matters, but the time it takes. How long will the journey take you?

Missonihoni · 30/11/2017 17:31

Sorry just to confirm it's 55 miles each way.

Google says an hour I know that means 1.5 realistically.

It's on a business park so train wouldn't work as I would have to drive to station here two trains them cab - even longer than driving.

@GinNeeded

You can definitely negotiate with air bnb hosts. I have an apartment which is always sold out at the weekend, and I have given up to 50% discount to contractors for a direct booking as guarantees my quiet times are filled.

Lol is your flat in Nottingham by any chance (she says full of hope) Grin

I’d commute and just book a hotel / premier inn for one night midweek / after late meetings / if I were particularly knackered .

BobbinThreadbare123 · 30/11/2017 17:35

I do 52 miles there and 52 miles back from work every day. It is worse on the way home but it's not that bad. Obviously not Nottingham but in summer it gets very busy!

Lweji · 30/11/2017 17:41

Do check Google at the times that you'd travel.
From my home to work it takes 35 min driving, but with the worst traffic it can easily take 90 min. If you managed to avoid rush hour then it could be 1 hour as Google says.

JustBeingJobless · 30/11/2017 17:44

I live in between Derby and Nottingham and spent 6 months commuting into central Nottingham at rush hour and had to allow an hour each way minimum. It was 9.6 miles each way!

I also spent 3 months doing a daily commute from home to Oldbury, which is 56 miles each way, and this could take anything from 45 minutes to 5 hours depending on the motorways. It was hell to be honest!

It really does depend where you are coming from and at what time.

Missonihoni · 30/11/2017 17:53

Five hours Sad fml.

Unfortunately I got caught up behind accidents on the M6 far too many times. 5 hours was extreme, but only happened once. I averaged 1.5 to 2hrs and that was leaving Oldbury at 4pm. Whereabouts are you travelling from?

Neverender · 30/11/2017 18:12

I've driven 50 miles to work each way for three years, including during a pregnancy. You can do it but it's bloody exhausting. Best idea (if you're planning on commuting) is to get up and out early (no later than 7) and then leave early to come home. Also make sure you have all meals planned as an unexpected delay will add an hour on.

I've done it and now I've had enough and got a job much closer to home but I don't regret doing it.

Neverender · 30/11/2017 18:13

Should add I am doing M25 and M3 so nowhere near you, only another 3wks to go!!!

Missonihoni · 30/11/2017 18:49

From Coventry.

I don't mind getting out for 6:30 and starting at 8
Finishing at four hopefully home for half five. I best get my car cleaned if I take it so I don't mind sitting in it for three hours a day 😂
